Literary prize will benefit Pinhoe Library

Devon County Councillor Roger Croad has thanked local prize winning author Kevin Brooks for donating £500 of books to his childhood library at Pinhoe, Exeter.

Kevin, winner of a prestigious children’s literary prize, the 2014 Carnegie Medal, took the coveted title for his book, The Bunker Diary, published by Puffin.

The book tells the dark story of a kidnapped boy held hostage in an underground bunker, where he is joined by other victims, none of which have any connection or knowledge of why they have been taken.

Bookings are now being taken for Exeter City FC’s Football in the Community roadshows, which are again running throughout the summer holidays across the region. Quick sex test for Living Coasts birds

Zoo keepers at Living Coasts in Torquay are using a hi-tech DNA test to discover the sex of newborn chicks more quickly.

The test, using cells from inside the shell of a newly hatched egg, has been developed by a company called Avian Biotech of Truro, Cornwall.

Senior Living Coasts keeper Amy Fitzgerald explained: “You can use feathers to do the test, but you have to wait until the birds have their full plumage - for penguins this is normally about 12 weeks. Two men arrested after drug seizure

Two men have been arrested and charged following a drug seizure in Exeter.

Noel Schimi, 24, from Redland Court Road, Bristol, and Joshua Woodbyrne, 23, from Fairbourne Road, London, have been charged with possession with intent to supply Cass A drugs (heroin and cocaine).

They were arrested on Saturday 28 June after police received reports of suspicious activity in Verney Street, Exeter, at around 11.45am.

They will be appearing at Exeter Magistrates’ Court today.

Charity bowled over by Brewin Dolphin

A local worthy cause was bowled over when they received a cheque for £500 raised at a charity cricket match.

The event held at Sidmouth Cricket Club, was organised by Sean Priestley, Assistant Director of Brewin Dolphin Wealth Management Company Exeter office who is a long-term player and member of the club.

Campaigners bike in the buff!

Shoppers in Exeter got a lot more than they bargained for on Saturday afternoon when a convoy of naked cyclists pedalled past.

It was all part of the World Naked Bike Ride which aims to highlight greener modes of transport.

On their Facebook page organisers describe the event as "a peaceful, positive and fun protest exposing the need to rediscover non oil dependent modes of transport, and highlight the vulnerability of cyclists as well as meeting new people and having fun decorating our bodies".

Fire strikes at second pub in Devon

Firefighters from Exeter Danes Castle, Middlemoor and Topsham were called out to a Clyst Honition pub after a domestic property inside caught on fire.

On arrival, at 5pm Saturday afternoon, crews immediately deployed two breathing Apparatus wearers to prevent the spread of fire within the flat.

The fire was extinguished using one hose reel jet, a positive pressure ventilation fan and thermal imaging camera were also used.

The cause of the fire was accidental.

Chairman and chief executive Tony Rowe OBE has spoken of his joy after the Exeter Rugby Group were crowned ‘Company of the Year’ at Thursday night’s South West Dealmakers Awards.

At a glittering awards ceremony in Bristol, Mr Rowe accompanied by fellow ERG director Nigel Hall, accepted the prestigious prize in front of an audience of some 300 people at the Thistle Grand Hotel.

Exeter Rugby Group beat off stiff competition from Good Energy, Advanced Insulation and Loungers with judges highlighting the work which had been carried out by the company over the past 12 months....
