Westbank’s Community Allotment made accessible to all thanks to Kier’s volunteers

Manpower and materials donated to Westbank Community Health and Care by the Kier Group have transformed the charity’s Community Allotment at Exminster into a space that’s accessible to everyone.

Eleven local volunteers from Kier’s Natural Resources Nuclear & Networks division recently worked over a total of about 4 days to create a tarmac access ramp, level the ground and lay a concrete pathway to make the allotment accessible to wheelchair users. The monetary value of the work amounts to approximately £7,000, including labour and materials.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall met members of the emergency services yesetrday to thank them and the Local Resilience Forum Partners for their work together during last winter’s severe weather and flooding that took place in the West Country.

The Duchess of Cornwall officially opened Devon County Council’s state-of-the-art newly refurbished Exeter Library this afternoon.

The Duchess was given a tour of the library, which has been transformed by the council’s multi million pound investment, and was introduced to staff and community groups who regularly use the library’s extensive facilities.

Tony Rowe bestowed with honorary degree

The University of Exeter is bestowing key figures from the South West region with Honorary Degrees this week, among 14 Honorary Graduates.

Kicking off proceedings was Tony Rowe OBE, Chief Executive and Chairman of Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club and also South West Communications Group, which he established in 1982.

He was joined on Monday 14 July by Roy Pike who led Torquay Boys’ Grammar School for 27 years, making him one of the longest-serving head teachers. He is an alumnus of the University of Exeter and three of his six children also graduated from the University.

Public to have their say at council meetings

Members of the public will have a right to speak and question politicians at full meetings of Devon County Council, if new proposals are agreed.

The council’s Conservative leader John Hart says people should be able to make representations and quiz Cabinet members at the start of each full council meeting and during the annual scrutiny committee examination of the budget.

Exeter’s High Street is enjoying a welcome injection of colour thanks to the goodwill of a local nursery.

Tim and Simon Boyce have kindly offered to sponsor and plant up some of the hanging baskets in the High street for a second successive summer.

The Bishop of Exeter has welcomed the news that women will be able to become bishops.

Bishop Robert said there was "relief all round" after the General Synod voted to approve women bishops.

Attending his first ever General Synod he said there was joy after the vote - but not triumphalism.

An atmosphere of respect for others was present throughout, he said. General Synod approved the legislation with a convincing majority.

Teignbridge is doing its bit to help stamp out smoking habits by signing up to the Local Government Declaration on Tobacco Control.

Teignbridge District Council has signed up to the statement of intent to do all it can to help reduce smoking rates among its communities as well as highlighting the harm smoking causes.

Murder inquiry: police return to Kingsbridge

Detectives investigating the death of a 17-year-old boy in Kingsbridge returned to the town one week after the tragic event to appeal for the public’s help.

A murder inquiry was launched after the death of Alex Peguero Sosa, from the Kingsbridge area, who was found with fatal injuries at a bus shelter in Prince of Wales Road around 2.20am on 6 July.

Lee Dent, 42, of East Portlemouth, Salcombe, has been charged with murder and remains in custody following an appearance at Exeter Crown Court on 10 July.
