‘Can Ewe Knit It?’ celebrates Shaun’s 30 years

Shaun the Sheep, the beloved stop-motion character created by Aardman, is celebrating 30 years since his debut in Wallace & Gromit: A Close Shave (1995). To mark this milestone, Aardman has launched a global crafting campaign called ‘Can Ewe Knit It?’, inviting fans and crafters worldwide to knit or crochet Shaun-inspired woollen blanket squares.

Oldest potholes in Devon revealed

A Roman road discovered on an archaeological dig has repairs to the road surface, showing that pot holes in Devon's roads are nothing new.

The excavation at Ipplepen, run by the University of Exeter, is back on site following the discovery of a complex series of archaeological features thought to be part of the largest Romano-British settlement in Devon outside of Exeter.

Young musicians to create a brand new show – in six days

Devon-based folk arts charity Wren Music are hosting a residency with an international flavour this summer, in a young musicians project that will culminate in three live shows – including a performance at Sidmouth Folk Week.

Over 20 musicians will gather in Okehampton to create a brand new show celebrating their traditional cultures. The 22 musicians, aged 17 to 30, will be travelling from Latvia, Sardinia and Lithuania, as well as from across Devon.

Illegal tobacco roadshow comes to Exeter

The campaign to tackle cheap illegal tobacco across the South West is coming to the Guildhall in Exeter on Saturday, 26 July.

Illegal tobacco is known to make it easier for children to start smoking, because it is sold at pocket money prices, meaning that young people could start smoking. Illegal tobacco is also known to make communities more attractive to criminals.

Devon County Council is working with Smokefree South West on a campaign to increase public awareness about illegal tobacco, persuade people to stop buying it and encourage more people to report it.

Exeter City fans unable to make the journey to Brazil for their team's anniversary game can still enjoy some of the experience.

Doctors and healthcare managers have thanked the 250 or so local people and organisations that gave their feedback on the future of Devon’s community services.

The Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group’s (NEW Devon CCG) Governing Body met last week (16 July) and received comments on the draft strategic framework for community services that people have made over the last eight weeks.

Groups benefit from PCC’s small grant scheme

Projects targeting the harm caused by alcohol abuse have been the big winners in round two of Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg’s small grant scheme. Mr Hogg chose to ring fence 40 per cent of the available pot to support alcohol projects after he made it a top priority in his revised Police and Crime Plan. Celebration of headteachers’ service to Devon’s children

A celebration of over 400 years of service to children in Devon by 14 headteachers has been held by the county’s schools chiefs.

The leader of Devon County Council, John Hart, and the Cabinet Member for Schools, James McInnes, Chief Executive Phil Norrey and Head of Education and Learning, Sue Clarke, hosted the celebration for heads who left their schools during the current academic year after a lifetime of service.

Most were retiring but others were going on to work in other areas.

In all they have spent 405 years educating children across the county.

Coast Path reopened near Thurlestone

Devon County Council has completed work to re-open a section of Coast Path south of Thurlestone which had been closed since early 2013 when it was severed by a cliff fall. Work has been funded by the Council who also negotiated the route by kind agreement with the landowners.

The new route follows the edge of the field, and whilst slightly longer than the original route retains stunning views along the coast. The path is by kind agreement of the landowners

Energy firm, RWE, has enlisted the help of experts at Wessex Archaeology, to excavate what is thought to be a medieval settlement at Batsworthy, North Devon, possibly dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries.

The excavation has been requested by Devon County Council ahead of RWE’s construction of a new wind farm at Batsworthy, North Devon, after initial research identified earthworks that suggested previous occupation.
