Plymouth Olympic diver Tom Daley was involved in a dramatic mid-air emergency as his plane was forced to land in Russia after developing a technical fault.

The Virgin Atlantic flight VS251 was travelling from Shanghai to London Heathrow this morning when it ran into trouble forcing it to land at Irkutsk Airport.

Tom wrote on Instagram: "Just had to make an emergency landing in Irkutsk, Russia on the way back from Shanghai. Here's the pic of the fuel dump before landing."

Dozens of firefighters tackle huge blaze

Dozens of firefighers have been tackling a blaze at a breakers' yard at Gilbrook Road, Woodbury, near Exeter.

Crews were still on the scene this morning making the area safe.

Residents were evacuated yesterday afternoon and at one point 10 appliances were in attendance.

Meanwhile, the Devon and Cornwall Police helicopter surveyed the scene, as a large crowd gathered on the ground.

Communities show that there is interest in supporting local services

A meeting at County Hall, Exeter, has drawn around 100 members of the public from communities across Devon, with a common interest in helping to support local public services.

The meeting follows widespread consultations by Devon County Council on the futures of a number of its services, including youth services and libraries, and which invited communities to respond with ideas as to how some services could be sustained.

The Council has so far received about 160 such ‘expressions of interest’ from individuals and groups, and Councillor Barry Parsons, the Council’s Cabinet...

Newtown remembers the First World War

The Newtown Community Association cafe on Sunday 3 August 2014 will be remembering the 118 men from Newtown who died in the First World War.

Visitors to the event, at the hut in Belmont Park from 2pm-5pm, will be able to come together, to step back 100 years and learn about the Newtown of old, to hear about the impact of the war on this small community and to celebrate the importance and value of being part of the community today.

The community has been involved in a community bunting project, making 118 individual flags to signify those that died.

MP welcomes latest unemployment figures

Neil Parish MP has welcomed new figures showing that 310 fewer people are relying on Jobseeker’s Allowance in Tiverton and Honiton compared to this time last year, with the number of people in work in the South West up by 139,000 since 2010.

Since 2010 the number of people on unemployment benefits is down by 371– a 38% drop.

Jobs are being created in Tiverton and Honiton in places like the Tiverton-based linear motion manufacturer HepcoMotion who have launched an extensive apprenticeships programme.

Firefighters' eight day strike ends

Firefighters in England and Wales will today come to the end of eight consecutive days of strike action over pensions, however other forms of industrial action will continue from this evening with no planned end date.

From 7pm tonight until further notice firefighters will not work voluntary overtime, non-contractual overtime or any additional voluntary hours.

Fire crews called to Riverside Leisure Centre

Fire crews were called to Exeter’s Riverside Leisure Centre at Exe Bridges this morning, after a call reporting a possible smell of gas in the basement and lift shaft.

Crews confirmed an unidentified leak and light smoke fogging in the lift shaft by using a gas detector.

Having confirmed a leak of hydraulic oil from lift equipment, crews isolated the lift equipment to make it safe using small tools.

Teignbridge celebrates Love Parks Week

The council is hosting the week-long programme of activities to showcase its range of parks, wildlife sites and open spaces.

Love Parks Week began in 2006 with a simple aim: to encourage people to visit, enjoy and take pride in their local parks and green spaces, driving the message that our parks and green spaces are essential to healthy, happy and strong communities.

And this year is no different with the emphasis on enjoying the great outdoors and exploring the weird and wonderful wildlife that lives in the soils and woodlands around us.

Electoral registration system changes

People in Exeter are to be told about the biggest change to the electoral registration system for almost 100 years.

Over the summer, Exeter’s Electoral Registration Officer will write to 90,000 residents in the city introducing the new system.

The letter will explain that a new, more secure, system of Individual Electoral Registration is being introduced to replace the old Victorian system where the “head of household” registered everyone living in a property. Now, each individual will be responsible for registering themselves.

To celebrate the start of the Commonwealth Games 2014, Princesshay, Exeter is giving away a gold themed prize each time a member of Team England win a gold medal.

The Commonwealth Games starts on 23 July in Glasgow and hopes are high for English athletes who were ranked third in the 2010 Games winning 37 gold medals.
