Exeter ranked move-friendly city

Exeter has been named one of the UK’s least stressful cities to move to, thanks to strong infrastructure, good housing availability, and ease of access to short-term services.

In a new national study released by Pay Less for Storage, Exeter scored 74 out of 100 in the “move-friendliness” index, ranking joint 10th alongside Inverness, Lancaster and Ripon. The research measured practical relocation challenges like van hire access, local self-storage options, chain-free housing stock, and the availability of short-term rentals.

Trail of discovery at Gara Rock

A new discovery trail devised by Gara Rock will take children and their families on a voyage of discovery when they visit the café restaurant or stay in the self-catering apartments and cottages during the summer months ahead.

Exmouth to become training ground for police

Shoppers and residents in the seaside town of Exmouth will notice a greater police presence in the town on Thursday (24 July) as 22 recruit police officers take to the beat. The extra officers are not a permanent increase in the officer numbers in the town, but are in their final stages of training at the Force training college prior to being sent to stations across the force. Firefighers tackle hay fire at Nadderwater

Firefighters are tackling a large hay fire at Nadderwater, just outside of Exeter.

Approximately 56 large bales of hay were involved in fire.

Fire crews were called to Trillow at around 9.30am today (Tuesday) following a call reporting a large quantity of hay on fire in the open.

Two fire appliances and a water bowser from Danes Castle and one fire appliance from Middlemoor attended.

Upon arrival fire crews confirmed a large quantity of hay on fire.

Fire crews tackled the fire using one compressed air foam systems jet.

Learn to make hay in the traditional way using a scythe in a workshop organised by EDDC’s Community Development and Countryside teams.

This traditional tool has been used for hundreds of years to manage grasslands across Europe and is great skill to learn.

The workshop is on Tuesday 5 August from 10am-3pm at Honiton Bottom Nature Reserve and there is no need to book. Sunshine has been ordered for the day but cannot be guaranteed.

Devon and Cornwall police provide good value for money, says report

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabularies (HMIC) has today published its latest inspection into the value for money provided by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Previous reports have highlighted the considerable challenges faced in Devon and Cornwall and the current report reiterates that the challenge remains larger here than in many other areas because the Force already spends less than others and receives a lower level of funding than other forces.

New report takes stock of jellyfish

2013 proved a record year for jellyfish sightings, and a large number of sightings have already been reported in 2014

A new report by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and the University of Exeter takes stock of where and when UK jellyfish occur in UK seas for the first time in over 40 years.

The report, published in the Journal of the Marine Biological Association, details over 5,000 reports of jellyfish sightings of eight different species sent to MCS by the British beach going public between 2003 and 2011 for their MCS National Jellyfish Survey.

Region's reservoirs well stocked say SWW

Water supplies in the South West are looking healthy as thousands of tourists head to the region for the start of the summer holidays.

South West Water, which provides clean drinking water to homes across Devon and Cornwall, expects this year to be its 18th consecutive year without water restrictions.

Total storage in the region's 21 reservoirs now stands at 90% compared to 83% at this time last year. Ground water sources supplying most of East Devon are also high.

Council house repossessions fall

Local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, is welcoming a reduction of 20% in the number of families facing repossessions of their council houses.

The figures for Exeter City Council are even more marked with an overall decrease of 48%, or 26 fewer households.

Across all housing sectors, where a CAB adviser has assisted clients facing repossession, clients have avoided repossession in over 85% of cases.
