Alanis Morissette joined by Pale Waves and The Big Moon for Devon date

Guitar indie-pop band Pale Waves and Mercury-nominated The Big Moon are the latest acts heading to the south Devon countryside for the county’s biggest music event this summer.

The bands are joining the line-up for seven-time GRAMMY Award winning Canadian / American artist Alanis Morissette ’s headline show with special guest musical powerhouse Skunk Anansie at TK Maxx presents Live At Powderham on Friday June 26.

Energy from Waste facility officially opens

The Chairman of Devon County Council, George Gribble, officially opened Exeter’s new energy recovery facility today (16 October).

Delegates from Devon County Council, the county’s waste contractor Viridor and construction and initial operating company TIRU assembled with local community representatives at an official opening event on site.

Members of East Devon voluntary organisations and community groups turned out in force for the annual event run by East Devon District Council called “Working Together for the Future of East Devon”.

Crime in Devon and Cornwall falls by almost 4% in a year

Recorded crime in Devon and Cornwall has fallen by almost 4% over the last year according to statistics published today (16 October). Overall crime for the 12 months to September 2014 fell by 3.9%, a drop of 3,336 crimes, compared to the same period in 2012/13. Victim-based crime, a key performance measure for the Police and Crime Commissioner, is down by 5.3% or 3,297 offences. The Force has seen significant reductions in domestic burglary (10.1% or 331 crimes) and vehicle offences (15.6% or 940 crimes). SWH Nominated for Environmental Award

SWH has been shortlisted for a Green Goods and Services award from the Devon Environmental Business Initiative (DEBI).

Representatives from the organisation visited SWH’s HQ yesterday to see the innovative reedbed recycling facility, which has reduced waste, saved costs and increased biodiversity on the site.

The judging panel will visit all four of the finalists short listed for this award over the next couple of days, from there, a winner will be chosen and then an overall winner of the Debi Award for 2014.

Over 170 smokers sign up to quit at Stoptober roadshow in Exeter

More than 170 smokers pledged to quit the habit when the national Stoptober roadshow visited Exeter.

The roadshow came to Bedford Square, Princesshay, as part of the Public Health England campaign to encourage smokers to quit this October.

The Comedy Fitness Brothers entertained the crowds while the Devon Stop Smoking Service offered information and expert advice to the public.

A total of 174 people signed up to the Stoptober challenge to give up smoking for at least 28 days.

Beware of unscrupulous door to door salesmen

Residents are being warned by police regarding unscrupulous salesmen. Police have received a number of calls relating to door to door salesmen operating in Mid Devon and East Cornwall. The people involved often wear home-made ID badges and purport to be part of a scheme aimed at helping ex–offenders.

When challenged they are unable to provide any verifiable evidence that a scheme exists. Essentially they go from door to door, often targeting elderly residents and state that they are ex prisoners having been reformed.

Devon and Cornwall Police are hosting a regional Modern Slavery Conference today to coincide with Anti Slavery Day on Saturday (18 October).

The conference is the first wave in building awareness for partners to try and combat the growing issues of slavery across the South West region. Motorway chase leads to arrests

Police arrested two men following a pursuit on the M5 on Wednesday night. At around 11.45pm on Wednesday (15 October) traffic officers attempted to routinely stop a Ford Fiesta motor vehicle which was travelling into Devon on the M5. The vehicle failed to stop and continued at speed southbound along the M5.

Officers, supported by the force helicopter, pursued the vehicle and boxing tactics were used in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to stop and rammed police vehicles in an attempt to escape. During the pursuit items were thrown from the vehicle.
