New children's library opens in Exeter

After months of building work, the new children’s library in Exeter is now open to the public. The Clore Children's Library features a brand-new sensory area, a floating mezzanine and activities for older children. Designed to be welcoming and accessible to all children and families, and championing interests, passions and their imaginations.

East Devon community backs beavers

An East Devon community has given its backing to a local population of wild beavers.

160 people attended a ‘beaver meeting’ in Ottery St Mary on Tuesday 19 August. The meeting had been specially convened by the Devon Wildlife Trust in an attempt to give everyone what the charity called, ‘a chance to make their views known about the future of their new and unusual neighbours.’

Surf boards caused serious crash

Police attended a serious road traffic collision on the A361 North Devon link road on Friday morning, 22nd August, at around 11.30am near South molton.

Three vehicles were involved in the collison, a Peugeot 206, a Triumph Spitfire and a Renault Megane.

The Peugeot was travelling towards Barnstaple followed by the Triumph. The Renault was travelling in the opposite direction towards Tiverton

Exeter Tennis Centre has unveiled a revamped coaching programme specially designed to make it easier for local families to pick up a racquet.

The new programme features an exciting selection of toddler, mini, junior, teen and adult sessions timed to make it possible for children, siblings and parents to be on-court at the same time.

First Great Western have named one of their high speed trains in celebration of the Red Arrows’ 50th display season.

The power is named “Red Arrows: 50 Seasons of Excellence” . The train naming, which took place at Exeter St David’s Station, celebrated the start of the 2014 Dawlish Air Show and marks a significant milestone for the Red Arrows.

Exeter Airport’s focus on customer service has helped it gain a coveted ‘Recommended Provider’ status from leading consumer organisation Which?

Paediatric Oncology rooms refurbished

Children and young people who are having oncology treatment on Bramble ward at the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital can now enjoy two newly refurbished rooms thanks to Dawlish charity Richard’s Wish.

Richard’s Wish was set up in memory of seventeen year old Richard Cridge, who had oncology treatment for Ewings Sarcoma on Bramble ward before he passed away in 2008.

Paignton Zoo has started an online wish list of gifts – for the animals.

It includes sprinklers to help cool the rhinos on a hot day, rubber balls and a bubble machine for monkeys to play with and aromatherapy oils for tigers to sniff.

Opening event for Honiton skate park

The new and improved £90,000 Honiton skate park will be officially opened on 2 September.

East Devon District Council have been working with young people at Honiton Community College and Honiton Youth Centre to design and choose improvements that the young people wanted.

Fall in number of beggars in Exeter

The number of people begging in Exeter city centre has dropped since the introduction of an initiative encouraging people to give instead to charities that support the homeless.

A recent street audit uncovered just five people begging for money on a busy Friday night.

That figure was seven before the multi-agency campaign begun, but recorded on a traditionally quieter Thursday night. There has also been a reduction of people begging during the day.
