Guitar indie-pop band Pale Waves and Mercury-nominated The Big Moon are the latest acts heading to the south Devon countryside for the county’s biggest music event this summer.

The bands are joining the line-up for seven-time GRAMMY Award winning Canadian / American artist Alanis Morissette ’s headline show with special guest musical powerhouse Skunk Anansie at TK Maxx presents Live At Powderham on Friday June 26.

A Closure Notice has been served today (Monday 3 November) on a ’legal high shop’ in Exeter.

The closure notice was served on The Wicked Head High Shop, located in South Street, Exeter under Section 76 of The Anti-social Behaviour, Crime & Policing Act 2014, new legislation which came into effect on 20 October.

This follows complaints over a sustained period regarding anti-social behaviour, nuisance and disorder by clients attending the premises.

More Devon children than ever looking for adoption families

More than 150 children across Devon need adoptive families each year.

With a growing number of children coming into the care system than ever before, there has never been a more crucial time to find potential adopters.

Devon County Council, Plymouth City Council and Torbay Council are working together as part of National Adoption Week 2014 (3 November to 9 November) to encourage more people across the county to consider adoption.

Exeter charity Hospiscare said a sad farewell to Barry Carpenter who has retired after 14 years as the support group co-ordinator.

During his time helping Hospiscare support groups across Exeter, East and Mid Devon, a total of £2.5m has been raised for the charity - including the Exeter group raising £1.25m.

At a farewell party Hospiscare chief executive Glynis Atherton praised Barry's hard work, support and encouragement and hands on approach to the role. She said the many extra hours he had given unpaid to the charity amounted to two years.

Exeter dentist backs calls for teeth brushing lessons

Nursery-age children should be given lessons in how to brush their teeth to try and stop the worsening dental health crisis in the UK.

The Exeter Dental Centre, located in the heart of the city, are backing experts at The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) which is urging local authorities to target children from the age of three – 12 per cent of whom are already eating too much sugar and showing signs of tooth decay – by going into schools to demonstrate how to brush teeth.

Nails and massages leads to £900 for cats

On Friday 17th October 2014 the Friends of Axhayes group held a charity pamper evening at the Cat & Fiddle Inn, Clyst St Mary, Nr Exeter. The doors opened at 6.45pm and treatments started at 7pm. Many local businesses provided short treatments such as mini facials, file and paint, hand & foot massages etc to help raise funds for Exeter Axhayes Cats Protection adoption centre. EDDC welcomes supercomputer

Last week's announcement that the Met Office plans to install a supercomputer in a new building complex at Exeter Science Park has been welcomed enthusiastically by leading members of East Devon District Council.

Part of the supercomputer will be sited at the IT Halls at the Met Office HQ in Exeter and part is expected to be sited at a purpose-designed building at the nearby Exeter Science Park, subject to planning permission.

CAB concern over repossessions

Local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, has identified a massive 56% increase in private sector tenant repossession cases. This is in comparison with the same period last year and shows that pressure on household budgets is biting harder than ever.

Across all housing sectors, where a CAB adviser has assisted clients facing repossession, clients have avoided repossession in 85% of cases.

Devon and Cornwall Police is changing the way that it communicates with the public and will be making changes to its Police Enquiry Offices as part of a forcewide review into public contact. This change will see Police Enquiry Offices at 12 stations across the Force close on Friday, October 31, 2014. National recognition for council team

East Devon District Council’s Revenues and Benefits team have received national recognition with two awards from a professional association.

The team are responsible for collecting council tax and for processing claims for council tax support, housing benefit and other assistance for people who may be struggling to pay their civic bills. Their work involves a great deal of contact with customers, many of whom are experiencing difficulty in making ends meet and so need to be treated with respect and sensitivity by council staff.
