Is environmental crisis also a spiritual one?

Authored by Martyn Goss

It is sometimes said that the environmental crisis is but a symptom of a deeper crisis, which is a spiritual one. I have a lot of sympathy with this suggestion, but what does it mean? Spirituality, in a general sense, has to do with what makes us tick. It draws on those aspects of life which we cannot measure such as beauty, joy, kindness, love, relatedness and purpose. Spirit in most traditions implies vigour and vitality - the very breath we inhale and the life-giving energy we find in our heart of hearts. It is thus both profound but also intangible. We may sense a deep spiritual aspect...

Transport Minister visits station site

Transport Minister Baroness Kramer has today (Friday 5 September) visited the Newcourt railway station site in Exeter as work prepares to get underway.

The Minister cut a turf to mark the start of construction on the £1.5 million scheme.

The Devon County Council project is being part funded with £741,000 from the Department for Transport’s New Station Fund. It is one of only five stations awarded funding nationally, following a successful bid by the County Council. The other half of the scheme costs will be met by developer contributions.

The owner of a fire-ravaged Exeter pub today said it was unlikely to re-open until after Christmas.

A huge blaze tore through The Hole In The Wall in Little Castle Street in June causing thousands of pounds of damage.

Today, owner George Sloan told The Exeter Daily that the clean up operation had taken longer than expected.

"We found quite a lot of asbestos that had to be very carefully removed and that has been a long job," said George.

"However, we are starting to get there now but it's highly unlikely we'll be able to re-open before the new year."...

Seatbelt ignorance causing injuries

Despite the fact that it is now over 30 years since wearing seatbelts in the front seats of vehicles was made compulsory (1983), and 23 years since it became law for rear seat passengers to belt up, failing to wear a seatbelt is still one of the primary contributors to sustaining injury in a collision.

Of the “Fatal Four” main causes of serious injuries and deaths on the region’s roads, failure to wear a seatbelt is the third most significant. The others are excessive or inappropriate speed, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and driver distraction.

There was also entertainment for the kids thanks to Redrow’s mascots Buster and Buddy. Redrow also invited visitors to the event to take a look around the wide range of two, three and four bedroom properties, which were decked with vintage bunting. Emma Solman, area sales manager for Redrow (West...

A quarter of a million people are expected to line the route of the Tour of Britain as it makes its way through Devon on Thursday 11 September.

According to an independent report, commissioned by Devon County Council, an extra £5.9 million was injected into the county’s economy as a direct result of the 2013 stage, which was watched by over 250,000 spectators, including residents of Devon and visitors,...

D&C Police criticised in report

Devon and Cornwall Police have been criticised in a report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary.

The report, ‘Core Business: an inspection into crime prevention, police attendance and the use of police time’, examines all 43 police forces in England and Wales.

It looks at three principal aspects of day-to-day policing: the prevention of crime; how crime is investigated and offenders are brought to justice; and freeing up and using police time more efficiently (which includes the use of modern technology). The report merges three complementary inspections into a...
