Record number of adults take part in Devon's cycle confidence sessions

Bike Week is being celebrated in Devon this week (9-15 June) with the news that more adults in the county took part in Devon's cycle confidence sessions last year than ever before.

A record 390 adults attended Devon County Council's sessions, delivered by Active Devon, in 2024/25 and the Council is aiming to beat that by reaching more than 500 adults this year.

Bike Week highlights the many benefits of cycling, from boosting health and wellbeing to cutting carbon emissions, and Bike Week 2025 is promoting cycle sessions for adults.

Leading wildlife recorder sounds out Devon

Chris Watson, one of the world's leading wildlife recorders, is preparing to bring sounds from rural Devon into the heart of RAMM.

When using the stairway linking the garden entrance to the Down to Earth gallery, visitors in 2015 will be treated to soundscapes from nearby coast and countryside.

Chris is currently capturing sounds from rockpools and estuaries, farmland and meadow, pebblebed heathlands and oak woodlands. Four seasonal recordings from each location will be used to create a changing soundscape evocative of Devon’s diverse ecosystems.

MP launches report on Religious Slaughter

Neil Parish, Member of Parliament for Tiverton and Honiton and Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Beef & Lamb has published a report into Meat Slaughtered in Accordance with Religious Rites.

The report follows an extensive inquiry in which evidence from a wide range of stakeholders from industry experts, Shechita UK, the Halal Food Authority, veterinary professionals as well as the Farming Minister George Eustice and the European Commission.

Crash leaves biker with life changing injuries

A motorcyclist was left in a serious condition following a collision on the A35 near Honiton. Police, ambulance and the air ambulance attended the incident which took place at 12.50pm at the junction of Ramsden Lane, Offwell. The collision involved a black Suzuki motorcycle, being ridden by a man in his fifties, and a red Toyota Yaris, being driven by a man in his eighties. The motorcyclist suffered serious chest and leg injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital. His condition is described as life changing. Both men are local to Honiton. A new website has been created to help visitors and residents get out and explore Devon’s green spaces, promoting everything from a gentle woodland stroll to an invigorating bike ride, from spotting our celebrated wildlife to discovering ancient geology.

Hospiscare founder to join Exeter Cathedral

The founding chairman of Hospiscare in Exeter is to be appointed as a Canon of Exeter Cathedral.

Rev Dr John Searle will be installed in the Cathedral during Choral Evensong on 11 September.

Enchanting artworks by an enigmatic painter, who has created art under an assumed identity, are now on display at a Exeter gallery. The collection, entitled ‘The Enchanted World of Ryder’, has been unveiled at Castle Galleries, Exeter, in order for the works to be judged by the public on its own merits, allowing the audience to escape into a world full of mystery and fantasy. Parents in Exeter are being given the opportunity to take their children to a series of fun, free pet workshops this summer, where they can interact with and learn more about a variety of scaled, finned and furry friends.

Both Pets at Home stores in Exeter are hosting a My Pet Pals Summer Activity Club, a series of free interactive pet workshops which will educate the next generation of pet owners on how to care for animals responsibly.

Cycling is being celebrated in Teignbridge as people are encouraged to ditch the car and get on two wheels for Cycle to Work Day on Thursday 4 September.

Cycle to Work Day is a national event championed by multi gold winning Paralympic medallist Dame Sarah Storey and is aimed at getting people to cycle into work for just one day.

Unscrupulous zero hours firms targeted

Business Secretary Vince Cable has called on business, unions and individuals to help identify and close potential loopholes in plans to ban the use of exclusivity clauses in zero hours contracts (ZHC).

The gardens of Paignton Zoo are now home to four of the largest garden ornaments ever seen.

A large gorilla covered in shells, a towering giraffe and a dazzling butterfly have all popped up in the Zoo grounds in recent weeks.
