Jolly Good Jaunt raises over £10k for charity

More than 250 walkers and their dogs took part in A Jolly Good Jaunt in the autumn sunshine, raising more than £10,000 for local charity Hospiscare which supports people living with a terminal illness.

Walkers of all ages, from Exeter and all over East Devon, enjoyed either a five mile or 13 mile walk, starting and finishing at the Deer Park Hotel, Honiton.

The event was raising money for the Hospiscare East Devon Day Hospice £250,000 Appeal which is aiming to pay for the final phase of a £1.2m day hospice currently being built in Honiton.

Air-pollution increases river flows

A study published in Nature Geoscience today shows that air pollution has had a significant impact on the amount of water flowing through many rivers in the northern hemisphere.

The paper shows how such pollution, known as aerosols, can have an impact on the natural environment and highlights the importance of considering these factors in assessments of future climate change.

Major funding for bioscience students

The South West Doctoral Training Partnership (SWDTP) is to receive substantial new funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) for the training and development of bioscience PhD students.

The BBSRC has announced an investment of £125 million ‘for the next generation of scientists to drive the economy of the future’. This will fund the training of 1,250 bioscience students at 12 doctoral training centres in the UK, including the Bristol-led partnership.

“Polar bear” for Living Coasts…

A polar bear called Bjorn is coming to the English Riviera – for one day.

Bjorn is a life-size and incredibly life-like animatronic. The huge, hi-tech puppet will perform three 20-minute shows at 11.00am, 2.00pm and 3.30pm on Wednesday 29th October.

Bjorn is playful, mischievous and extremely huggable, and is just about kept in check by Arctic explorer Ursula. Their science-based show has been performed at events such as BT Young Scientist of the Year, Cambridge Science Week, W5 Science Centre & World Oceans Day.

Over 5,000 students descended on Princesshay, Exeter between 6.30pm – 9pm on Wednesday 1st October for its annual Student Lock In event. Over 35 retailers and restaurants opened their doors after hours to offer discounts of up to 25% to students for ‘one night only’.

Region’s pay is rising at half the rate of the national average

There is a huge pay gap between workers living in the East and West of the South West region, with the people living in the East the best paid, earning up to £17,000 more than those living in the West.

That’s one of the findings of the ManpowerGroup Pay League, a new series of local insights into UK pay trends from ManpowerGroup, the world leader in innovative workforce solutions.

Football tournament's charity goal

An Exeter School sixth former has helped raise valuable funds for local charity, the Devon Air Ambulance Trust, by organising a World Cup-themed charity day and raising over £3,000.

Upper Sixth Former Emily Ackland first got hooked on fund raising when she cycled from London to Paris last summer raising over £11,000 for PAPYRUS.

She said it was then that she experienced the satisfying feeling of fundraising for charity.

"It is very fulfilling to know that you are helping others whilst also pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone," said Emily.
