Science on tap: Exeter pubs to host Pint of Science 2026 

Some of Exeter’s best-loved pubs will be hosting this year’s Pint of Science, offering up fascinating talks on everything from atoms and galaxies to understanding neurodiversity.

Running from 18-20 May, this year’s festival marks the 13th edition of the annual event, which brings researchers out of the lab and into local bars in 42 cities across the UK.

In Exeter, venues including the Bootlegger, Arcadia and City Gate Hotel will transform into hubs of scientific discussion with informative talks, demonstrations, live experiments, and a multi-city pub quiz competition....

Stagecoach South West is urging Exeter residents to ‘shop local’ and support independent stores on ‘Small Business Saturday’, today.

The bus company donated 200 Exeter Dayrider tickets – dated for 6th December only - to ‘Exeter Trails’, a collection of independent businesses across the city. Customers have been snapping them up across the week ready to enjoy a day of free, unlimited travel on the big day.

Exeter Trails businesses have tweeting about the offer all week, asking customers to visit the relevant shop and either quote a tweet or answer a ‘weird and wonderful’...

Stamp duty news welcomed by property industry

Long-established Crediton estate agency, Helmores, believes that the recent changes to Stamp Duty charges, announced in the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Autumn Statement on 3 December and in effect now, is a much fairer system for home buyers.

Under the new rules, George Osborne has said that 98% of homeowners in England and Wales will pay less Stamp Duty as of midnight on 3 December, meaning that home buyers could save an average of £4,500 on stamp duty (for a property costing £275,000), which bring down the cost of buying a property for all but the highest valued properties....

Police seek wanted man for recall to prison

Police in Devon and Cornwall, area are seeking a 57-year-old man who has wanted for recall to prison.

Colin Steven Diggle, aka Steve Clarke, (pictured) was released from prison in early November on licence. He is thought to have since breached the terms of that licence.

Devon and Cornwall police are proactively following a number of lines of enquiry to ascertain his current location.

Police intend to arrest and question once he has been located.

Researchers to use algae to clean up mine water

A ground breaking research project by the GW4 Alliance aims to clean up water from a Cornish tin mine, using algae to harvest the precious heavy metals and produce biofuel at the same time.

GW4 brings together the South West and Wales’ four leading, research-intensive universities: Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter.

Researchers from all four universities, in collaboration with Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) are now working with the Coal Authority and Veolia to take untreated mine water samples from Wheal Jane tin mine in Cornwall into the laboratory and grow algae in them...

Doctors give hope to dying Exeter man

Hospiscare nurses and doctors have given hope to a dying Exeter man who is now looking forward to spending a very special Christmas with his new found family.

Richard Potts, 66, arrived 20 days ago at the city hospice two stone underweight and hallucinating because he was not eating nor taking his medication properly. But he is leaving tomorrow (Friday) with a spring in his step and is looking forward to spending time with the daughter he didn’t know existed until four years ago when he received a “bolt out of the blue” letter from her asking to get together.

Witheridge parents stage budget bake off

Parents from Witheridge took part in a ‘budget bake off’ at Action for Children’s Oakmoor Children's Centre in Witheridge, Tiverton.

The session was the culmination of a Money Skills course, part of a national programme run by Barclays in partnership with charity Action for Children, which helps families and young people with budgeting and finance.

Man arrested in connection with shed theft

Police have arrested a suspect following a public appeal.

Spencer Bamping aged 41 was arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft today (5 December).

Bamping from Chudleigh Knighton, Newton Abbot surrendered himself into police custody.

He has since been charged with burglary and theft of a shed and remains in custody to appear before South Devon Magistrates tomorrow morning.

Police had sought the public’s help in finding him in connection with the theft of a shed in Newton Abbot in October.

Police need the public’s help in finding a man who is sought in connection with the theft of a shed in Newton Abbot in October.

Spencer Bamping, 41, from Chudleigh Knighton, Newton Abbot, is believed to be in the Teignbridge area, although he also has links to South Devon, Torbay, Exeter and North Devon.

Officers have undertaken extensive enquiries to locate Bamping (pictured), however attempts so far to trace him have proved unsuccessful.

Bamping is described as white, 5ft 9ins, of proportionate build, with short brown hair.

£5m confirmed to finish coast path by 2020

The Deputy Prime Minister today confirmed extra funding to speed up the completion of coastal paths around England on a visit to Port Gaverne in Cornwall.

The cash will go towards completing England’s vital coastal walkways by 2020, ten years earlier than planned.
