Devon charities announced as partners for huge weekend of live music

Four Devon-based charities have been selected to be official partners for the county’s biggest music event this summer.

TK Maxx presents Live At Powderham runs for four nights from Thursday June 25 to Sunday June 28, featuring headline shows from vocal powerhouse Teddy Swims, seven-time GRAMMY winner Alanis Morissette and global superstar Lewis Capaldi.

Each night will see a local charity given the opportunity to have a team of fundraisers on site and for 2026 Live At Powderham will support Devon-based charities who make a big impact in the communities they serve....

Leading Women UK Election Special

In the lead up to the 2015 General Election, Leading Women UK hosted a series of Election Special networking events across Devon.

These events were open to men and women and gave attendees the chance to have their questions answered by a panel of political representatives.

On Thursday 16 April the Exeter Election Special took place at the Southgate Hotel.

The network was joined by Labour candidate Ben Bradshaw; Conservative candidate Dom Morris and Green Party candidate Diana Moore.

Cranbrook’s first town council elected

Cranbrook’s first ever town council members have been elected.

There are 12 vacancies on the new body that will be set up to manage local governance for the new community.

Nine people stepped forward for the seats on the new town council and so all nine are duly elected uncontested.

The new council is quorate (it has enough members to carry out its duties) but there will be an opportunity to co-opt three more members in the future.

A notice announcing the result of the search for new town councillors is on display at Younghayes community centre.

BBC drama The Coroner to be filmed in Devon

BBC One has announced that Claire Goose and Matt Bardock will lead the cast of a new daytime drama, The Coroner.

Claire Goose (Casualty & Waking the Dead) will play Jane, the Coroner and Matt Bardock (Casualty) will play Davey, the local Detective Sergeant. They will be joined by Grace Hogg-Robinson (Birdhouse) who will play Beth, the Coroner’s daughter, Oliver Gomm who will play Clint, the Coroner’s Officer, Beatie Edney (Poldark) who will play Judith, Jane’s Mother and Ivan Kaye (Layer Cake & Eastenders), who will play Mick, the pub landlord.

Exe Estuary Teaching program wins industry award

A teaching resource, to help school children learn all about coastal areas, has won an industry award.

Living with a Changing Coast (LiCCo) is a european project helping coastal communities to better understand, prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change, sea level rise and erosion on the natural and human environment on both sides of the channel.

Its UK partners include the Environment Agency, the Exe Estuary Management Partnership, Devon County Council and the National Trust.

Pedestrian seriously injured in collision

Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision in Sidmouth which left a 65-year-old pedestrian with life-threatening injuries.

Emergency services were called to Church Street in Sidford at 6pm yesterday (16 April) after a Vauxhall Corsa car-derived van was in collision with the male pedestrian.

The Sidmouth man sustained serious injuries and was flown by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, where he remains in a stable condition.

The driver, a 41-year-old man from Seaton, was uninjured.

TEDxExeter to be streamed live

TEDxExeter will be available to watch live via a computer or smart phone anywhere in the world for the first time this year.

Its annual conference takes place on Friday 24 April at the Exeter Northcott Theatre, and tickets sold out in two hours last December. Now those who were disappointed don’t have to miss out, as the conference will be streamed live via the TEDxExeter website.

Residents invited to speak at open forum

People in Exeter are being given the chance to quiz councillors on any 'burning' issues for the city.

Exeter residents are invited to put forward questions to members of the joint County and City Councils' Exeter Board, at their next meeting on 28 April at 5:30pm at County Hall in Topsham Road, Exeter.

The Board allocates 15 minutes for their ‘open forum’, with 3 minutes per speaker, with a maximum of three to four speakers to allow time for discussion.

OAP banned from keeping animals

A Teignbridge man, found guilty of offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, has been told by Exeter Magistrates Chair of the bench "you will not keep animals ever again."

Leslie Weatherill, 73, of The Hams, Ide, was found guilty at Exeter Magistrates Court in March, after failing to improve the squalid conditions that he kept ponies and dogs in.

The court had heard how Mr Weatherill kept his ponies on an area of scrub and woodland near Doddiscombsleigh which, according to a national expert on horses, was inadequate for their needs and so their welfare was severely...

Eight crews tackle thatch fire

Eight fire engines from Witheridge, Chulmleigh, Crediton, North Tawton, Exeter, Tiverton, Okehampton along with a water carrier, aerial appliance and an incident command unit were mobilised to reports of a thatched roof on fire at a property at Oldborough Cross near Morchard Bishop this morning (Thursday 16 April).

On arrival crews confirmed thatch roof involved in fire and are at work using hose reel jets and ladders to extinguish the fire.

At 12.45pm crews asked for a further two appliances. These were mobilised from standby at Exeter.

Music quiz raises £800 for Hospiscare

A music quiz at Tiverton Golf Club raised nearly £800 for local charity Hospiscare.

People of all ages, including club members, friends and the public, put their knowledge to the test in The Big Fun Music Quiz.

The event attracted 106 people in 18 teams, who raised £780.20 via entry money, a raffle and an auction of the winning prize.

Katie Chantler, head of fundraising for Hospiscare, said: “We want to say a huge thank you to Tiverton Golf Club for hosting the music quiz.
