Exeter to Celebrate Best of Local Food and Drink at Gate to Plate Festival

Exeter is set to host a celebration of the region's finest food and drink producers when the Exeter Gate to Plate Food Festival comes to Sidwell Street on Sunday 4 October.

The free, family-friendly event will bring together more than 70 food and drink makers from across Devon and the surrounding area, with most producers based within a 30-mile radius of Exeter.

Visitors can expect a wide variety of local produce including artisan bakers, farmers, brewers, orchardists, coffee roasters, delicatessens, sweet treats and an array of street food vendors.

Nomadic Travel gains recognition from industry specialists for outstanding service A specialist Devon-based travel company has scooped its second top national award.

Nomadic Travel, on Gandy Street in Exeter, has been announced as one of the top three best independent agencies in the UK by the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), at a prestigious event in Cordoba in Spain.

Exhibition explores forgotten wartime wrecks

Cullompton services is currently home to a fascinating exhibition which looks to raise the profile of under-represented aspects of the First World War.

The temporary display, which runs until December 18th, offers a great chance to view recovered artefacts and learn about some of the lesser-known, but compelling, stories of the Great War.

Over 700 wartime wrecks are known to lie off the south coast of England. These include largely forgotten ships and craft of all shapes and sizes, which were carrying out a myriad of different tasks and activities when they were lost....

Council pays tribute to Hazel Ball

Staff and Councillors at Exeter City Council have been saddened by the news of the death of one of its former directors, Hazel Ball.

Hazel died on Saturday morning following a short illness.

She retired from the City Council in 2012 as Director of Community and Environment . She spent 35 years working for the local authority, joining in 1976 and working up through the ranks. She became Head of Environmental Health Services in 1996 and then a Strategic Director in 2001.

Exeter Prison ‘dangerously overcrowded’

EXETER Prison could be sacrificing rehabilitation and support with “dangerously overcrowded” cells and reduced staff, according to a business which provides prisoners with phone access.

According to figures released by the Howard League for Penal Reform, Exeter Prison is the fourth most overcrowded prison in the UK – and the number of staff there has been slashed by nearly a third.

Many inmates are sharing cells designed for one person, raising concerns around the safety of prisoners and the number of inmates released early to create space.

Met Office meteorologists are forecasting a very warm, occasionally hot and humid, week across the UK for much of this week with temperatures expected to be at their highest on Wednesday.

RAMM welcomes millionth visitor

Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) welcomed its millionth visitor since its redevelopment last Friday 26 June.

Polly Hill, a student at Exeter College was treated to a special behind-the-scenes tour with Tony Eccles, the museum’s Curator of Ethnography who gave a special insight into some of the museum’s objects from the four corners of the world.

Thousands of excited fans descended on Newton Abbot Racecourse to watch Boyzone and Alesha play the racecourse’s first-ever concert on Sunday 28th June.

Suspect packages made safe

Following assessment by bomb disposal experts, the devices found on York Road and King William Street in Exeter this morning, Monday, June 29, have been made safe.

The scene cordons on both King William Street and York Road are now being reduced to the immediate scenes of the incidents as a result.

Road closures around the city centre will begin to be lifted shortly, although traffic congestion in the run up to rush hour is expected to take some time to be cleared.
