Exeter to Celebrate Best of Local Food and Drink at Gate to Plate Festival

Exeter is set to host a celebration of the region's finest food and drink producers when the Exeter Gate to Plate Food Festival comes to Sidwell Street on Sunday 4 October.

The free, family-friendly event will bring together more than 70 food and drink makers from across Devon and the surrounding area, with most producers based within a 30-mile radius of Exeter.

Visitors can expect a wide variety of local produce including artisan bakers, farmers, brewers, orchardists, coffee roasters, delicatessens, sweet treats and an array of street food vendors.

Cranbrook, East Devon’s new community has been named one of the Top 60 Developments for 2015 by Inside Housing magazine.

Cranbrook has been shortlisted in the ‘Affordable Housing Development of the Year’ category, and will now compete with five other developments to try to win over the judges and become category winner.

Emirates, a global connector of people, places and passions, and its ambassador for rugby, Ben Foden, has today launched a flag hunt in Exeter to find the Official Flag Bearers for the tournament.

Young players selected for RWC ball teams

Over 130 young players from across England and Wales have been given the chance to be involved in Rugby World Cup 2015 as part of the 13 Ball Teams.

The Ball Teams programme, run by England Rugby 2015 in conjunction with RFU, invited clubs to nominate young players in recognition of their achievement and their commitment. Concern for dairy farmers grows

The law firm behind the campaign to protect West Country milk producers – Support South West Dairy Farmers – is warning that the continuing drop in retail milk prices can only put further pressure on the industry.

Last week, Sainsbury’s announced that it is reducing its prices for one pint and two pints of milk to 45p and 75p respectively. It stressed that this will not mean a reduction in the price paid to farmers, which remains ring-fenced.

Mystery hole appears on Exmouth beach

A large mystery hole has appeared on Exmouth beach, forcing a section to be closed off.

The hole, which appeared at the eastern end of the beach, near Orcombe Point, was discovered at lunchtime yesterday (2 July) by a member of the public.

The National Maritime Operations Centre sent Exmouth Coastguard to secure the area.

On arrival the Coastguard team found a hole measuring approximately 15ft x 15ft filled with water. The surrounding sand was also soft and fresh holes were appearing nearby.

Cranbrook’s Younghayes Centre will soon be generating its own electricity and creating a pot of money to help the growing community after E.ON paid for solar PV panels to be installed.

Voluntary group Community Helpers in Cranbrook (CHIC) approached energy company E.ON and East Devon District Council and proposed utilising the roof space on the Younghayes centre to generate renewable energy and both organisations were keen to help make the idea a reality.
