Work to start on Heavitree Road bus improvements

Improvement work to enhance bus services on Heavitree Road in Exeter will get underway next month (February).

The scheme, which will start on Monday 2 February, involves the construction of a new traffic island and installation of a new set of traffic signals at the end of the outbound (eastbound) bus lane between Grendon Road and Polsloe Road/Barrack Road.

These new signals will give buses priority at the Polsloe Road / Barrack Road junction, making it easier for buses to progress towards Heavitree Fore Street or move from the bus lane into the right turn lane for...

Work on Mamhead Slipway postponed

Work on the new £1 million Mamhead Slipway in Exmouth is now planned to start in spring 2016, rather than later this year to avoid impacting on the migrating birds which spend the winter on the River Exe.

The Exe is home to thousands of birds which arrive in the autumn from the Arctic regions and spend the winter here before returning north in the spring. Because of the vital role that the estuary plays in the survival of these bird species it is designated as a Special Protection Area, and this limits activities which could affect their survival.

Buglife and other organisations involved in Devon Local Nature Partnership are appealing to Devon's residents to do one simple thing to help bees and other pollinating insects this National Pollinator Week.

Wild bees and other insect pollinators are faced with a perfect storm of pressures which have all led to their decline, these include: a loss of wildflower-rich habitats through the intensification of farming, urban development, and the increased use of pesticides. As a result half of the UK's 27 bumblebee species, two-thirds of our moths and over 70% of our butterflies are in...

We all know that the best way to clear the mind, loosen the limbs and get the ‘juices flowing’ during a busy working day is to get up from our desks and have a short break.

Rather than trudging down to the coffee machine though, the turn-to activity becoming among forward thinking businesses is table tennis.

Ping pong, wiff-waff: call it what you will; is enjoyed by 101,000 people weekly according to the latest figures from Sport England’s Active People Survey.

Table Tennis England, the sport’s official governing body, has recognised this trend with the launch of ‘...

Exeter’s Engineering students can be forever proud as the future carriers of the torch of Britain’s manufacturing heritage – for without engineers, Britain’s future to compete on the World’s stage will remain bleak.

To be frank, it is a luxury to study some less intellectually challenging subject but a real endurance and test of conviction to study engineering. The subject takes no prisoners and Exeter University certainly sets a very high standard in academic achievement. Nevertheless, engineering is about implementation and solving real problems: boldly stepping up to the plate...

Private sector growth at 12-month high

Private sector activity in the South West rose at the fastest pace for a year in June, according to the latest PMI® survey data.

That followed a slowdown in growth over the previous two months, and the latest expansion placed the South West among the fastest growing UK regions. That said, growth in total activity was partly accounted for by falling backlogs, as new business growth picked up only slightly during the month. Cost pressures remained historically weak, while jobs were created at a strong pace.
