New children's library opens in Exeter

After months of building work, the new children’s library in Exeter is now open to the public. The Clore Children's Library features a brand-new sensory area, a floating mezzanine and activities for older children. Designed to be welcoming and accessible to all children and families, and championing interests, passions and their imaginations.

A weight-loss expert from Exeter has struck gold for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 250 people in the area to lose weight every week.

Penni Ball, who runs the America Hall Slimming World groups every week, was presented with a Gold Award by Founder and Chairman Margaret Miles-Bramwell at the slimming organisation’s annual awards ceremony in Birmingham on June 20th because of her success in supporting slimmers to reach their dream weight.

LHC team to cycle for Hannahs

On Sunday July 5th, a twenty-strong team of architects and urban designers from LHC’s Exeter and Plymouth studios will cycle across Devon to raise funds for one of the UK’s oldest charities, Devon based Hannahs.

The team will cycle an impressive 58 miles and climb 3750 feet of rolling Devon hills, raising money towards a new £11,000 all-terrain wheelchair that will get more kids and young adults at Hannahs off-the-beaten track and having more adventures, whatever their abilities.

Exeter School pupil selected for South West Youth Orchestra

Exeter School Year 11 pupil Verity Stroud who has been offered a place in the South West Youth Orchestra for both bassoon and contra bassoon.

The residential course runs in August at Dean Close School, in Cheltenham, and the finale concert will be held at Cheltenham Town Hall.

The repertoire they are performing is Benjamin Britten's famous "Four Sea Interludes" and three classics by Maurice Ravel (Rapsodie Espagnole, Alborada del Gracioso and Bolero).

Trials for improved recycling service

An improved recycling collection service is to be trialled in two East Devon areas this autumn following approval from the district council’s Cabinet.

Around 1,800 households in the Feniton and Exmouth (The Colony) areas will be able to recycle more during the trial as the council is adding cardboard and mixed plastics to the extensive number of items it already collects from the kerbside each week.

Kitsons staff take on charity challenge in memory of colleague

Staff from leading Devon law firm Kitsons are getting ready to take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge this July to raise money for charity in honour of their friend and colleague, Mark Batten.

Letters from famous writers to Tarka the Otter author given to University

A fascinating collection of personal letters from a host of British literature luminaries to Henry Williamson, the author of Tarka the Otter have been donated to the University of Exeter. The University has received more than 2,000 letters from such celebrated writers, including, Siegfried Sassoon, John Betjeman and Enid Blyton as part of Williamson’s extensive personal archive. University of Exeter works with Cole Commission to improve international trade

The Cole Commission is in discussions with the University of Exeter Business School to explore the possibility of creating degree programmes specialising in international trade.
