This summer, Brixham’s Fish Market will come alive with flavour and festivity as the South West Sardine Festival arrives on Sunday 03 August 2025, bringing a vibrant new celebration to the heart of one of Britain’s most historic fishing towns.

Drugs gang jailed for 140 years

An organised crime group bringing class-A drugs from Liverpool to Devon have been sentenced to 140 years in prison at Exeter Crown Court today (Thursday 23rd July).

Nineteen people in total have been sentenced for conspiracy to supply class-A controlled drugs. 17 pleaded guilty with the remaining two found guilty following trial at Exeter Crown Court in March.

Throughout 12-month long Operation Reform, heroin and cocaine with an estimated street value of £1.25 million and cash in excess of £91,500 was intercepted.

Country parks receive Green Flag Awards

The Grand Western Canal Country Park and Stover County Park have today (Thursday 23 July) been named among the best green spaces in the UK.

The parks, which are both managed by the County Council, are among a record-breaking 1,582 parks and green spaces across the country, and 90 in the South West, to be presented with the Green Flag Award.

Exeter police launch Operation Slug

Police in Exeter are launching a crime fighting operation to tackle theft of garden and power tools from allotments across the city.

Known as Operation Slug, allotment owners will be issued with a special kit that contains Smartwater, an invisible property-marking solution. Warning signs will be displayed to help deter burglars.

Each kit allows plot owners to mark their possessions with a unique forensic code that is traceable. This can then be used by the police to identify items should they ever be stolen, as well as help link suspects to crime scenes.

Law could make Exeter’s food waste illegal

Exeter Green Party says that if new rules adopted by the European Parliament are agreed by the European Commission, sending food waste to the Exeter’s energy from waste plant could become illegal.

The Parliament last week voted to end the incineration of all recyclable and biodegradable waste. http://www.greens-efa.eu/circular-economy-14330.html

Currently, food waste in the city makes up around 35% of ‘black bin’ waste and is incinerated at the £46m Marsh Barton energy from waste plant site.

Police are appealing for the public’s help in trying to locate some distinctive items stolen from the Exmouth area.

Two rings and an ornament (pictured) were stolen during a burglary at a house in the St John’s Road area between Monday 29 June and Tuesday 7 July.

The items are described as a white gold ladies wedding ring with diamond cut effect, a ladies vintage Art Deco style gold band, and a wind-up ornament.

Exeter City Football Club will once again celebrate diversity in the local community by holding an international football tournament this Sunday (26 July).
