Middlemoor roundabout traffic signals will take time to repair

Devon County Council is urging motorists to take extra care at Middlemoor roundabout while traffic signals at the junction remain out of action.

The traffic lights were damaged by a car which struck the controller unit of the system at the start of the Christmas period.

The County Council is doing everything it can to resolve the issue, but bespoke parts need to be made to get it back up and running, which will take some time. Work will start on site next week (w/c Monday 19 January) while a new “16-phase controller unit” is currently being built off-site by a specialist...

Jewellery stolen in East Devon burglary

Police are appealing for information after a large amount of jewellery was stolen during a burglary in Woodbury, near Exeter.

The property on Cottles Lane was broken into sometime between 3.45pm on Wednesday 9 September and midnight on Thursday 10 September.

Six gold and silver necklaces, five gold rings and several pairs of earrings were taken by the offender(s).

May of the items are of sentimental value to the victim.

One of the stolen rings is similar to the one pictured, although it also has small emeralds either side of the main stone.

D&C Police welcomes report

Devon and Cornwall Police has welcomed a report from HM Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) and its acknowledgement of the hard work and commitment to improving services safeguarding children.

The Force has made a clear commitment to prioritising safeguarding and to making it everybody’s responsibility which means that all members of staff will be expected to be able to competently deal with all aspects of child protection. This is reflected in the fact that officers respond quickly and can immediately deal with any threat risk and harm in respect of children and young people....

Her Hajesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary today published an inspection report into the child protection work carried out by Devon and Cornwall Police, following an inspection carried out in May 2015. This is part of a rolling programme of child protection inspections of all police forces in England and Wales.

Inspectors say they were concerned to find:

* A lack of understanding of the extent of child sexual exploitation and an inconsistent response across the force area

Exeter's sporting history revealed

Sports fans will be able to find out about Exeter's sporting history at a series of free talks starting at the weekend.

The illustrated talks have been developed by Exeter's Red Coat Guides as part of the city's Festival of Rugby celebrating this year's Rugby World Cup 2015.

Starting on Sunday at 11am at the Custom House down on the Quay, the 90 minute talk will explore the sports played in Exeter from Roman times until the present day. Human skull found at Devon tip

A reminder is being issued to users of Devon County Council’s recycling centres to think about the waste which they are taking to the sites, so as not to waste Council and Police time.

It follows the discovery of a human skull in the general waste skip at Sutton Barton Recycling Centre near Honiton on Thursday (17 September). The centre was closed for a few hours as Police had to be called to the site to examine the skull. On closer inspection it was found that the skull had been used for educational purposes.

Man's body recovered from the sea

Officers were called at 1pm on Saturday, 19 September, 2015 by coastguards after reports of man’s body was discovered floating in the water near Prawle Point, Salcombe.

An empty dinghy was seen by a member of the public and after a search of the area by the Lifeboat a body was found.

The local man in his 80s was given CPR at the scene but was pronounced dead.

His family have been informed and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

A file will be prepared for the coroner.

New research from SeeAbility, the national sight loss and disability charity, shows nearly four in ten (37%) pupils attending special schools have no history of eye tests. This alarming figure is made worse as children with learning disabilities are 28 times more likely to have serious sight problems than other children. There are 8,335 students in special schools in the South West and if these findings are replicated across the region 3,084 children with disabilities are missing out on the eye care they need.
