Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Four dedicated staff members, one volunteer, and one inspiring Adult Young Carer accompanied them on a two-night adventure packed with connection, laughter, and discovery - a well-deserved break from their day-to-day caring roles at home.

Details of RWC Exeter Fanzone revealed

Details of the Fanzone that will be set up in Exeter’s Northernhay gardens during the Rugby World Cup have been revealed.

City council officials have told the Exeter Daily that it will be open for 13 dates opening as early as 10am for some games and closing as late as 11.30pm for others.

Alcohol will be sold from 11am to 11pm (10.30pm on Sundays) .

The dates are as follows:

Corbyn rally to take place in Exeter

Labour leadership favourite Jeremy Corbyn is to hold a rally in Exeter, it has been announced.

The sudden popularity of the MP for Islington North has surprised his own party.

Opinion polls have put Corbyn ahead of his rivals Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall.

A similar rally, due to take place in Cambridge this week, was postponed.

The organiser of the Canbridge rally announced that the event would be rescheduled due to police concerns over high numbers expected to turn out.

Unexpected guests drop in on radio star

BBC Radio Devon breakfast show presenter Simon Bates had some unexpected guests drop in (literally) yesterday.

The broadcaster, who lives near Tiverton, told his listeners he was "preparing for a bath and in his Marks & Spencer dressing gown" when there was a knock on the door.

He was surprised to see a stranger - and a hot air balloon, in his "back yard".

The drama was soon over however.

Former Radio 1 DJ Mr Bates said the balloon was packed away and removed within 20 minutes and he was offered a bottle of whisky as a thank you.

Warning to drivers after downpours

The AA today warned that driving in wet conditions can be hazardous and even those with local knowledge can be caught out during heavy downpours.

Standing water creates a potential aquaplaning hazard as well as reducing visibility.

RD&E gets top marks in CQC survey

Children and young people who have received treatment at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital have given the Trust top marks for communication in the first Care Quality Commission (CQC) Children and young people’s survey 2014.

The survey shows that children who underwent inpatient or daycase treatment in the hospital’s dedicated children’s ward, Bramble, felt that they were listened to by staff and that procedures and outcomes of treatment were explained in a way that they could understand.

BBC weather forecasts may be supplied by foreign meteorologist, it has emerged.

After the Exeter-based Met Office lost its contract with the BBC for the first time since 1922, the frontrunners to take over are Dutch New Zealand firms.

An Exeter man is set to experience a taste of stardom by appearing in a new nationwide TV advert for Britain’s biggest bingo site, Tombola.

Neil Coles, 32, was shortlisted from hundreds of players from around the country to make it through to the 2015 advert. Neil makes his TV debut from Monday 24th August, when the new advert airs across the UK.
