Exeter charity launches free "Joy Rides" to help people get cycling again

Ride On is launching a new, free cycling programme aimed at beginners, people returning to cycling after a break, or anyone looking for a sociable ride to help them get back outside this summer.

Called Joy Rides, the sessions launch on Saturday 18 July and run weekly through to September, alternating between Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings to fit around work, family, and shift patterns. Each ride follows one of three easy, mostly traffic-free routes around Exeter Quay, the Exe estuary, and Topsham, led by trained ride leaders and open to all abilities.

Learn with Devon’s libraries

Libraries across Devon are taking part in a national initiative to help people learn new digital skills in order to support economic growth and improve wellbeing.

According to a recent report by the House of Lords, the UK is in danger of falling behind in its digital skills capabilities, which could cost the economy around £2 billion.

In response The Society of Chief Libraries (SCL) and the Association of Senior Children's and Education Librarians have joined forces to launch ‘The Universal Learning Offer’.

The Environment Agency is urging people and businesses in Devon and Cornwall to be ‘#floodaware’, during its annual Flood Action campaign. Almost 5 million people in England are at risk of flooding. Yet many still haven’t taken these 3 simple steps to protect their family, home and business:

  • check your flood risk on the Environment Agency’s online flood maps
  • sign-up for free flood warnings by calling Floodline on 0345 988 1188 or by visiting the GOV.UK website

Stagecoach invests £2.5m in luxury vehicles

Monday 23 November sees Stagecoach’s flagship brand, Stagecoach Gold, introduced on route 57, which connects Exeter and Exmouth with Topsham, Lympstone and Brixington.

The local operator has invested £2.5m in 11 new vehicles, all of which feature free Wi-Fi and USB charging, as well as leather seats with extra legroom, giving customers a luxury travel experience between city and sea.

A University of Exeter engineering expert has been awarded a prestigious national award for his research into how we can sustainably and reliably address the emerging challenges around water supplies.

Leading local advice charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, is delighted to announce that The Family Law Company will be joining its successful legal clinic scheme.

Appeal after woman's arm broken at Ottery

Police are appealing for witnesses following an injury road traffic collision in Ottery St Mary.

The collision occurred at around 5.28pm on Thursday 5th November, in Strawberry Lane Ottery St Mary between a dark coloured Audi A3 vehicle and a female approved marshal who was controlling traffic at the Tar Barrel event.

An altercation allegedly occurred between the driver of the Audi vehicle and the marshal, resulting in the driver accelerating through the road closure.

On doing so the female marshal was dragged along by the vehicle for a few metres before falling...
