Exeter Racecourse launches Community Raceday and calls for Devon’s community heroes

Exeter Racecourse has launched a brand-new Community Raceday and is inviting people across Devon to nominate a community hero who deserves recognition.

Community Raceday takes place on Friday, February 20, during half term, and coincides with Devon Day at the racecourse. The initiative celebrates the people who make a real difference in their communities – from volunteers and carers to sports coaches, fundraisers and quiet grafters who go above and beyond.

Rare bats win £700k lottery boost

A project which is working to secure a future for one of Europe’s most endangered bat species has been awarded £707,000 of National Lottery funding.

The Devon Greater Horseshoe Bat Project, which has received the grant via the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), will now work for the next five years across the county to secure the long term future of one of the rarest animals in Northern Europe. The project is being led by the conservation charity Devon Wildlife Trust in a partnership involving 18 other organisations.

Thieves steal bike from Buddhist Centre

Last week, a greatly prized bike was stolen from a resident at a Buddhist Centre in Exeter.

The bike, which was chained securely to a metal pipe, belonged to a keen cyclist who was devastated to find a destroyed chain and no bike in the morning.

The cyclist has started a campaign to find the stolen bike.

The distinctive bike looks like that pictured below and the frame number is A350804388; if you see it please call the police on 101 and quote the crime reference number CR068034/15.

People can find out how to become a councillor on Tuesday (13 October) as part of Exeter's Local Democracy Week.

Next May sees all-out elections in Exeter, with 39 seats up for grabs following the changing of ward boundaries last week by the Boundary Commission.

Exeter’s railway was a triple winner at the national Community Rail Awards held at Torquay’s Riviera International Centre on 1st October.

In front of an audience of more than 330 rail industry staff and volunteers, a campaign to promote the counties’ most scenic rail routes won first prize in the Marketing category. Exeter CAB offers pensions guidance

Yesterday marked six months of freedom and choice for pensions and Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau is encouraging eligible people in Exeter to seek free guidance to make sure they understand their options.

The new pension freedoms, introduced in April, mean people over 55 who have a defined contribution pension now have the option to take their pension savings as an annuity, cash or flexibly over time.

Stay safe when using level crossings

British Transport Police (BTP) officers in the South West are urging the public to do their level best to stay safe when using crossings.

The call comes as they take part in the latest phase of Operation Look, a week of action (5–10 October), which will see extra patrols at a number of crossings.

BTP recorded more than 100 offences at crossings in the region during 2014/15, with 116 offenders identified and dealt with.

While the majority of those offences are committed by motorists, BTP officers also want to make sure pedestrians are aware of the dangers too....

Appeal following theft of marine equipment

Police in Exmouth are appealing for information following the theft of marine equipment.

The theft occurred sometime between Sunday 30th August and Saturday 3rd October when thieves removed a padlock from a boat moored in the river Exe estuary at Exmouth and stole equipment including a Honda outboard engine, an inflatable doughnut ring and fishing equipment, valued at £900.

Exeter School pupils lead citizen science on plastic

Exeter School pupils have taken part in a unique outreach project in which they are leading and participating in a scientific research project on chemicals in plastic food packaging.

The pupils are joined by teenagers from other Devon schools and are being mentored by experts at the University of Exeter, gaining first-hand experience of all aspects of scientific research, from project planning to public engagement.

It’s business as usual in Exeter’s Rugby World Cup 2015 Fanzone despite England not qualifying for the quarter finals of the Tournament.

The great atmosphere that has been enjoyed by more than 17,300 people continues in the Fanzone today (Wednesday 7 October) with Exeter’s second Host City match, Namibia versus Georgia being screened in Northernhay Gardens at 8pm.
