Dementia UK shares the signs and symptoms of dementia to look out for ahead of free clinics in South West

Nationwide and Dementia UK’s free face-to-face clinics are returning to Nationwide’s Torquay, Plymouth and Exmouth branches this February, offering specialist support in a safe, comfortable and private space for people to discuss any aspect of dementia.

Hosted by Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, the clinics are open to anyone impacted by dementia, offering life-changing support to families and individuals in the area. Appointments can be booked via Dementia UK’s website here .

An inspiring line up of authors will be heading to the East Devon coast this March for Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival’s Spring Weekend.

Famous names heading to the seaside town this March include BBC newsreader and journalist Clive Myrie, Poet Laureate Simon Armitage and mathematician Marcus du Sautoy. The Festival stages two events a year: the two-day Spring Weekend, which this year takes place on 1 and 2 March, and the main Festival which takes place between 18 and 22 September.

Two dementia researchers are hosting Culture Box Live this month, an exhibition which aims to stimulate public interest in dementia.

Dr Chloe Asker, a Research Fellow in the School of Psychology, and Professor Victoria Tischler, Professor of Behavioural Science in the same School, will be presenting research findings and artist commissions from the Culture Box project, which supported people with dementia and their carers during the pandemic by providing creative and arts-based activities. Creative training for care staff and artists will also be available.

New mural uncovered promoting acts of kindness in central Exeter

The ‘Exeter Kindness Mural’ is now complete, inspiring passers-by to be kind to others. Painted by local artist, Paul Colsell, it is a reproduction of a famous Charley Mackesy illustration from his best-selling book and Oscar-winning film. The Exeter Daily previously covered news of the project getting the go ahead last July. The Crossline Building in Heavitree Road has been scaffolded for several months while the gable wall was renovated and painted. Garden birds in Devon are counting on you!

The world’s largest garden wildlife survey returns this month, with hundreds of thousands of people watching and counting the UK’s garden birds over the last weekend in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

Over half a million people took part in 2023, counting more than nine million birds. In Devon, nearly 10,900 people took part, with the House Sparrow taking the top spot as the most commonly seen bird, followed by Blue Tit and Blackbird.

The UK’s leading biochar start-up, Earthly Biochar , has announced the launch of its government-funded pioneering project to try and save Britain’s ash trees. There are 125 million1 ash trees in England, Scotland, and Wales, and it is estimated that we could lose up to 80%2 of these to the disease, ash dieback.  

First identified officially in the UK in 20123, ash dieback is a highly destructive disease caused by a fungal pathogen, Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. Originating in Asia before spreading to Europe, the fungus has already destroyed more than 80%4 of young ash trees in Norway...
