Exeter ranked move-friendly city

Exeter has been named one of the UK’s least stressful cities to move to, thanks to strong infrastructure, good housing availability, and ease of access to short-term services.

In a new national study released by Pay Less for Storage, Exeter scored 74 out of 100 in the “move-friendliness” index, ranking joint 10th alongside Inverness, Lancaster and Ripon. The research measured practical relocation challenges like van hire access, local self-storage options, chain-free housing stock, and the availability of short-term rentals.

Exeter School boys coach rugby in Swaziland

Exeter School Sixth Formers Tom and Will Counsell enjoyed a life changing experience in Swaziland.

The brothers spent four weeks as rugby coaches working with the Swaziland-based charity SKRUM, whose aim is to give the school children of Swaziland social awareness and sex education while having fun and playing rugby.

They found the experience quite overwhelming at times, but genuinely believe that SKRUM makes a difference on a daily basis.

ELF welcomes bank's donation

Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) has received £5,000 to help fund a family suite for critically ill or end of life patients at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. The donation was provided by the Santander Foundation which offers grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities. ELF provides transport, accommodation and guidance services to families affected by blood cancers and blood disorders. Exeter rally in support of refugees

In response to the escalating European refugee crisis hundreds of people gathered outside Exeter Cathedral yesterday (Saturday 12th September) to show their support for those that find themselves in need of refuge.

The shocking pictures of children dying in the Mediterranean and reports of treacherous journeys being undertaken to escape war and persecution have stirred the hearts and minds of the people of Devon to help. Horror movie night at Exeter Cathedral

The magic of the movies comes to Exeter next week as the Cathedral prepares to host its first ever Silent Movie Night.

Suicide prevention campaign launched

A programme aimed at reducing the numbers of suicides across Devon is being rolled out – thanks to partnership between the County Council’s and Torbay’s Public Health teams.

For the first time in the region, a specialist suicide prevention course, called ASIST will be available to agencies and businesses where staff could potentially come into contact with people contemplating suicide. The programme is being announced to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day (Thursday September 10).

SW house prices continue to rise

Acceleration in house price growth in the South West continues with 63% more respondents seeing a rise in prices over the last three months, according to the latest RICS UK Residential Market Survey. This is the highest level since April 2002.

ugandabox is an exciting new Devon project set up this summer. It has sent over 150 kilos of kids and babies clothing, blankets, medical supplies and toys from East Devon families over to a children's crisis centre called Potter's Village in Uganda.

ugandabox's founder, Esther Apsey has close connections with Potters Village, as her Aunty and Uncle, Sue and Mike Hughes run the centre - as a GP and Director - and they have been there for nearly 3 years now.

Police officers and staff in Devon and Cornwall are a shade more colourful this week for a unique charity drive which has raised £12,000.

Many police officers and staff have swapped traditional epaulettes for bright pink ones and are sporting pink lanyards on their Force ID badges for a week [7-13 September].
