Westbank’s Community Allotment made accessible to all thanks to Kier’s volunteers

Manpower and materials donated to Westbank Community Health and Care by the Kier Group have transformed the charity’s Community Allotment at Exminster into a space that’s accessible to everyone.

Eleven local volunteers from Kier’s Natural Resources Nuclear & Networks division recently worked over a total of about 4 days to create a tarmac access ramp, level the ground and lay a concrete pathway to make the allotment accessible to wheelchair users. The monetary value of the work amounts to approximately £7,000, including labour and materials.

Best feet forward for the Foundation

Dozens of walkers will be putting their best feet forward to raise money for the Exeter Foundation tomorrow (Sunday Sept 20).

Starting at Sandy Park, the 10-mile walk takes a circular route through the beautiful Exe Valley and back to Sandy Park, and they will round the day off with a drink and a famous Sandy Park pasty while watching Rugby World Cup pool match between New Zealand and Argentina. Dartmoor’s landscape is among the richest in western Europe in terms of its prehistoric archaeological remains. Dartmoor contains the longest stone row in the world and has the greatest number of archaeological sites out of all the UK National Parks. Exeter skittlers aiming for British title

Exeter's Two Tribes skittles team are currently defending their mixed team title in a tense finals of the Butcombe British Skittles championships being held in Torquay today.

The team who play out of St Thomas Social Club showed impressive form in the play off stages and are tipped to do well again.

But two popular teams, Heavitree Heroes who were mixed team runners up last year failed to qualify this time. Meanwhile the Sinners, women's champions in 2008 and 2011, are not competing this year.

Cranbrook's Co-operative opens for business

Cranbrook’s beavers, brownies, guides, cubs and scouts will be helping to open The Southern Co-operative’s new store in Cranbrook near Exeter yesterday (Friday 18 September).

The new store, which has created 17 jobs for local people, will be open seven days a week from 6.30am-11pm. Exeter’s first Yoga for Children classes have now been launched by Annelie Carver (former partner of Michelmores and Ashfords and more recently General Counsel and Company Secretary of Flybe).

Four sailors rescued from Exe

Four people were rescued from the Rive Exe in fading light after their boat began to sink.

Exmouth lifeboat was launched at 7.40pm yesterday and on arrival at the scene found the sailing crew up to their waists clinging to sinking boat near Topsham.

They were assisted by local police officers.

All of the sailors arrived safely back on land.

1,320 kids to race through Exeter streets

A record number of 1,320 primary school pupils across Exeter are set to take to the stage, and complete their own half marathon challenge as part of Exeter’s Great West Run Schools’ Challenge, taking place on Sunday 18 October 2015.
