Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Continuing a year of celebrations to mark Exeter’s new Heritage Harbour status, two large-scale traditional sailing vessels will be mooring at Exeter Quay for the first time in many years. This weekend will see the arrival of both the sailing barge ‘Snark’ on Saturday (23 September) and historic fishing smack ‘Britannia’ on Sunday (24 September). Impact of flash floods being examined

More than 140 properties are thought to have been flooded across Devon during Sunday’s flash floods.

The initial estimate has been gathered by the Environment Agency, Devon County Council’s Flood Risk Management team and local city and district council officers as part of the flood recovery operation.

Officers have been on the ground visiting the worst affected areas to investigate the extent of the damage caused by the torrential rainfall. City and district authority “street scene” teams have also been clearing debris from affected areas.

Ukrainian refugee who won Exeter scholarship nominated for Student of the Year

A student who fled war-torn Ukraine before embarking on her studies at the University of Exeter Business School has been nominated for the AMBA Student of the Year Award 2024.

Kateryna Halkina was nominated for the award by her tutors on The Exeter MBA, who described her as someone who stands out for “exemplifying exceptional leadership, strong teamwork, goal-orientation and innovative thinking”.

Kateryna came to the UK as a refugee under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, settling in Dawlish near Exeter with a host family.

An Exeter professor will be aiming to ‘make climate cool again’ by giving away ice creams today in Union Square Plaza for New York Climate Week.

‘Save the Flavours’ is a campaign by Climate Basecamp , a new science communications platform that aims to use popular culture to get people talking about climate change.
