Topsham based community charity, The Estuary League of Friends, is one of just 194 small charities nationwide to have been selected to take part in the first-ever Small Charity Week match funding campaign.

Small Charity Week is a joint initiative by Big Give, Global’s Make Some Noise, and NCVO. The campaign offers selected charities the chance to double public donations, access unrestricted funding, and receive practical support to strengthen their work and resilience.

Red tape puts brakes on 20mph limits

A research report released today (30 September 2015) by Brake, the road safety charity, has called for the removal of unnecessary barriers faced by local councils in implementing 20mph speed limits to deliver safer walking and cycling.

The report finds that moving to 20mph limits across built up areas would deliver significant safety benefits, especially for pedestrians and cyclists, and suggests red tape and a lack of strong national government leadership is at fault for the current UK postcode lottery when it comes to reaping the benefits of lower traffic speeds in communities...

Volunteers wanted for MoodFood trial

Researchers from the University of Exeter are seeking participants for a trial into whether certain types of food could prevent depression.

Experiencing depression often goes hand in hand with being overweight. The MoodFood trial will compare different nutritional and lifestyle strategies that might change mood and wellbeing in people with a higher than average body mass index (BMI).

An award-winning Devon PR and marketing firm has announced it is to sponsor the Exeter Chiefs.

Astley Media, based in Exeter, is sponsoring the Premiership Rugby side’s European Cup shirts, alongside other regional sponsors including Flybe, Centrax, SW Comms, Watson Fuels and Car Supermarket.

Child injured in quad bike collision

Police are appealing for witnesses after a child was injured when a quad bike overturned in Holsworthy at the weekend.

The mini quad bike was being ridden by a four-year-old girl from the local area, with family members walking alongside, when the incident happened at around 5.30pm on Sunday 27 September.

They were on the public footway, which leads from Bodmin Street over the River Deer, heading in the Bude direction, when the quad bike collided with the verge and wall of the viaduct bridge and overturned onto the four-year-old child.

Six new brightly coloured council homes set to providing sustainable and low energy housing for some of Exeter’s most vulnerable families.

New eco-friendly homes at Reed Walk, Newport Road will house six local families who have been waiting for a suitable place to live on Exeter’s Housing Register. The new three-bedroom homes, including one fully wheelchair accessible property, were completed in September.

Bishop Sarah has ordained four new priests, and in doing so became the first woman bishop in the Church of England to lead an ordination service.

Bishop Sarah ordained Leisa McGovern and Sheila Walker, in Ottery St Mary, and Glyn Lewry and Jill Purser in Sampford Peverell.

The four clergy have spent a year in the parishes as deacons but now they are ordained priests by Bishop Sarah, they will be able to take weddings and lead Communion services.

Restoration of historic maritime villa now complete

A two-year project to restore an 18th-century maritime villa in Lyme Regis to its former glory is now complete and open to the public.

Belmont House, a Grade II* listed seaside villa, was rescued from decay in 2007 by The Landmark Trust. The villa was once home to world-famous author, John Fowles, author of The Magus and The French Lieutenant's Woman.

The two-year restoration project involving a raft of volunteers and specialist tradespeople began in late 2013 and was completed last month.

Ageing population key to unlocking 2.6m homes

Almost three million homes could be released into the housing market if better incentives and information were offered to older home-owners, encouraging them to downsize into smaller properties, according to The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

THE NHS Trust that manages Exeter Community Hospital and local community health and social care teams is aiming to recruit more nurses when it holds two open days in October.

The Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust is looking for experienced and newly-qualified nurses to work across its acute and community services.
