New report reveals UK's happiest places to be a dog

Exeter comes 9th in Dogs Trust's Happy Place Index, but we all have room for improvement

For dogs, a happy place can be somewhere physical, like cuddling up next to their owner on the sofa, dozing by the fire or rolling around in a muddy puddle. But it can also be a feeling, like the excitement of a new toy, the comfort of being with their favourite humans, or the relief of just being somewhere safe.

To examine the various factors that contribute to a dog's satisfaction, an academic has developed a new formula – the Canine Happiness Score (CHS).

Warning issued over exploding hoverboards

Consumers are being urged to think before buying this year’s ‘must have’ for Christmas, a hoverboard, which could be at risk of catching fire or even exploding.

Devon and Somerset Trading Standards Service is appealing to Christmas shoppers to follow a 12-point safety checklist (below) if they are thinking of buying a hoverboard or have already purchased one.

Since October 15 more than 17,000 self-balancing scooters – or ‘hoverboards’– have been tested at national entry points due to safety concerns.

Christmas themed Creation Station at Crealy

Children can get creative at Devon’s Crealy Great Adventure Park this December at a series of Christmas themed workshops run by the Creation Station.

Families are invited to attend one of the three Christmas themed arts and crafts workshops which aim to promote learning and creativity for children, whilst interacting with parents. The sessions are free to attend and all materials will be supplied.

TEDxExeter tickets sell out in 22 minutes

Massive demand meant that tickets to TEDxExeter 2016 sold out faster than ever before on Tuesday.

Tickets for the live event at the Exeter Northcott Theatre sold out in 20 minutes, and tickets for the simultaneous livestream to the nearby Alumni Auditorium all went before the end of the day.

TEDxExeter is Exeter’s leading festival of ideas, and next year’s conference will be the fifth held in the city. It is also streamed online so that everyone who could not get tickets can still watch it live. Videos of all the talk will also be free to watch online after the event....

Seaton Jurassic recruitment day

A major new visitor attraction is planning to begin the job of recruiting its staff at a special recruitment open day being held in Seaton on Saturday 5th December.

The final phases of work are currently being made at the Seaton Jurassic visitor centre before its opening in spring 2016. The new visitor attraction, which is on Seaton’s Underfleet, will include both indoor and outdoor interpretation spaces as well as a café and retail area.

In preparation for its grand opening Seaton Jurassic is now looking to recruit a range of posts in roles as varied as volunteer...

Woman found dead in East Devon

Police are investigating the death of a woman found in a vehicle in East Devon.

Following information received police attended the area of Fenny Bridges in East Devon at around 4pm on Wednesday 2nd December.

A woman’s body was found in a vehicle in this area.

She has yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be a 71-year-old local woman.

A forensic post mortem will be carried out later today.

Investigating and scene of crime officers will today continue an examination of a vehicle and the area in Fenny Bridges where it was discovered....

National Lottery winners deliver festive cheer

Local Lottery winners have helped a Taunton charity get the festive season underway with a visit to Conquest Centre where they delivered gifts and spread Christmas cheer.

Five winners from across the South West, with a combined fortune of over £10 million, joined forces to spend a day volunteering at the Centre.

Jenn Burston from Exeter, Dione and Richard Buss from Bridgwater, and Paul and Denise Hardware from Street, pulled on their wellies and got stuck in to help with yard duties, painting and supporting riding lessons.

Devon-based Hospicecare has been given a welcome boost thanks to a generous donation from David Wilson Homes.

The developer was on the lookout for a local charity which could make good use of the furniture from the show homes at Rougemont Park in Exeter ahead of the launch of a brand new phase at the development and the opening of new show homes.

Items that were donated included beds, sofas, dining tables and chairs, pictures, ornaments and lamps which are now on sale in the charity’s Fore Street store in Exeter.
