Council Leader welcomes decision on future of local councils in Devon

City Council Leader Cllr Phil Bialyk has welcomed the Government's announcement on local government reorganisation in Devon.

The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government has approved the joint proposal by Exeter and Plymouth city councils to create four new unitary authorities for the county.

This means that in future, one council rather than multiple councils will deliver most local services in each area.

The new unitary councils will be:

Police are trying to find a missing 52-year-old man last seen in Bristol.

Neil Mackenzie (pictured) was last seen in the Stapleton area of Bristol at around 10am today, Thursday 11 February, and he spoke to a relative by phone shortly after.

Police are concerned for Neil's welfare and would like to find him as soon as possible.

Exeter travel firm marks 10-year milestone

Exeter-based travel consultancy, the School Travel Consultancy (The STC), will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this month by sending out the message to not stop travelling.

Since the city-based firm started trading in 2006, it has sent as many as 2,500 secondary school pupils from across the country to worldwide destinations including Vietnam, Tanzania and Morocco. Pupils have embarked on activities from visiting remote tribal communities in Venezuela and trekking in the Himalaya, to building playgrounds in Morocco and helping turtle conservation in Costa Rica.

Devon caravan park fire

Three fire engines from Axminster, Colyton and Honiton were mobilised to a report of a fire involving an office building and a workshop on a caravan park just after 2am today.

On attendance the incident commander confirmed a fire involving a campsite office and building also used as a garage. Four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets in use.

A fourth fire engine was mobilised from Seaton with an incident command unit from Wiveliscombe and a Water Carrier from Yeovil on request of the incident commander.

Positive signs for SW property market

New buyer enquiries across the South West rose for the eleventh month in succession in January according to the RICS UK Residential Market Survey, January 2016, with 40% more respondents seeing an increase in new buyer demand rather than a fall.

Feedback to the survey continues to suggest that demand is being boosted by a rush of buy-to-let investors looking to buy before the 3% stamp duty surcharge comes into effect in April. In the South West 96% of respondents said they did expect an increase of purchases by buy-to-let investors prior to the changes.

The Right Hon Lord Neuberger, President of the UK Supreme Court, has visited the University of Exeter to meet staff and students.

Lord Neuberger’s informal visit came following an invitation from student Ammar Khan, who spent time shadowing him earlier this year. He asked to meet students during his time at the Streatham campus and spent an hour answering their questions on a wide variety of topics, including how to create a more diverse group of judges, the pressures faced by the judiciary and media coverage of court cases.

East Devon sex offender jailed for 22 years

A man has been jailed for 22 years after being convicted of a string of historic sexual assaults on two young girls.

Paul McLean (pictured) was found guilty following a six-day trial at Truro Crown Court on Wednesday 3 February, and sentenced on Friday 5 February.

McLean, 50, of Talaton Road, Whimple, Exeter, was charged with 32 sexual offences relating to two young girls that were committed between 1992 and 2007 in Malvern, Worcestershire and Newquay, Cornwall.

Charities benefit to the tune of £145,000 thanks to Exeter Foundation

Following a successful year of fundraising, Exeter-based charities and projects are better off to the tune of over £145,000 thanks to donations from the Exeter Chiefs’ official charity, the Exeter Foundation.

Some £97,534.34 was given to projects who had applied for funds from the Exeter Foundation, including £10,000 towards a play area at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital’s Bramble Ward, £25,000 for a new hydrotherapy pool at Vranch House and a £1,500 contribution for a new Volunteering in Health minibus.

Designer bag stolen from Exeter charity shop

Police are keen to identify a woman after a designer handbag was stolen from a charity shop in Exeter city centre.

The Mulberry bag was stolen from the WESC charity shop in Sidwell Street on Tuesday 12th January at around 1pm.

Officers are keen to speak to the woman pictured, who has a distinctive mole on her left cheek, as she may be able to assist with enquiries.
