Fire Service support team turn rescuers as tiny kitten is saved from car

A group of fire station workers who usually leave dramatic rescues to their firefighters got a taste of the action when a tiny kitten became perilously stuck inside a car.

The usually desk-based colleagues were called upon to help when a member of the public made an unexpected detour and drove to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters at The Knowle in Clyst St George because they could hear a cat crying out from somewhere in their car.

Walk to work and support FORCE

FORCE Cancer Charity has launched Walk to Work Week - a campaign to get us all out of the car and off the buses and trains for at least one day later this month.

Free swimming offer for Exeter primary school children

All Exeter children will be offered free swimming lessons before they finish primary school, Exeter Labour have pledged.

Exeter Labour thinks it's important that young people learn to swim as early as possible - not only to ensure they are safe and confident around water, but also because it gets children active.

Body found believed to be missing junior doctor Rose Polge

Police believe the body of a woman found in the sea off Portland in Dorset could be that of missing Torbay Hospital junior doctor Rose Polge.

A Devon and Cornwall Police statement said: "On Friday the 1st April, a woman's body was recovered from the sea east of Portland Headland, Dorset.

"Police are currently working on the belief that the body is that of 25-year old missing person Rose Polge, from Torquay.

Help tackle flood risk in Devon

The Environment Agency has announced that it is looking for enthusiastic individuals to get involved in managing flood risk in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The South West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee is one of 12 committees across the country that make key decisions on local priorities for flood and coastal risk management.

Taser numbers reviewed in bid to protect communities

The number of taser trained police officers across Devon and Cornwall is to be reviewed with as part of a new project.

Devon and Cornwall Police are seeking public feedback on plans which could see the number of taser carrying officers across the Force increase over the next two to three years.

There are currently 530 taser trained (non-firearms) officers in the Force, but under new plans, this could increase to around 1,000 by 2018.

Police investigate double A38 collision

A lorry driver died and a man was left seriously injured in two connected collisions which closed the A38 near Exeter on Saturday morning (9 April).

Emergency services were called at 6.10am after an 11 tonne Isuzu HGV was involved in a single-vehicle collision between Chudleigh Station and Harcombe Bends.

The lorry, which had been travelling towards Plymouth, went out of control and crossed the central reservation, and ended up on its side on the opposite carriageway.

Firefighters called to dishwasher blaze in Exeter

Firefighters were called to fire at an Exeter home this morning (Monday 11 April).

Two fire appliances from Danes Castle attended the blaze at a house in Norwich Road, Exwick after reports of a dishwasher on fire.

On arrival crews found the dishwasher was well alight and got to work using two breathing apparatus sets, one hose reel jet and a positive pressure ventilation fan.

The ground floor kitchen was slight damaged by fire and the remainder of the ground floor severely damaged by smoke.

A total of four breathing apparatus sets were used in total.
