Big boost for Devon residents and businesses with slow internet connections

Connection vouchers worth up to £500 are now available to residents and businesses across Devon and Somerset.

The vouchers will cover the cost of connecting to an improved broadband service to boost broadband speeds from 2Mbps, or under, to a minimum of 10Mbps.

Man seriously injured in South Devon crash

Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision in which a man was seriously injured near Teignmouth.

Officers were called to the scene shortly before 1am on Tuesday 19 April following reports of a single vehicle collision on the A381 Newton Road near Bishopsteignton.

A silver Suzuki Ignis collided with a stone wall near the Metro Motors car sales garage and the vehicle rolled causing significant damage to the car.

The 39-year-old male driver of the car, who was the only occupant, was located by a passing member of the public trapped within the vehicle.

The average age of people in Exeter getting help with their pension needs is 61 despite free guidance being available for anyone over 50, Citizens Advice Exeter has revealed.

This means people could be planning their retirement finances 11 years earlier, to make sure they have the right money to fit into their future plans.

Sidmouth beacon to be lit to mark Queen’s birthday

East Devon District Council Chairman Cllr Stuart Hughes will be lighting a beacon on Sidmouth seafront on Thursday (April 21) to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday.

The beacon will be among a chain of more than 1,000 beacons to be lit across the country that evening to mark Her Majesty’s milestone anniversary. The Queen will light the first one in Windsor.

parkrun celebrates five years at Killerton

This Saturday hundreds of runners will tackle the 5km course at the National Trust’s Killerton estate to celebrate the fifth anniversary of parkrun and will be baking a birthday cake to mark the occasion.

Killerton was the first National Trust property to work with parkrun to host the popular 5km run.

The free run takes place every Saturday at 9am, and the number of runners has grown from 44 at the first Killerton parkrun to over 370 on the busiest ever day. The parkrun organisers hope to break the record this week as the event reaches its five year milestone.

Exeter blood donors honoured

Dedicated blood donors from Exeter, who have potentially saved more than 1,000 lives between them, were recognised by NHS Blood and Transplant for their loyalty and commitment.

The four blood donors from Exeter, who had collectively made 407 donations, were honoured for their lifesaving efforts with commemorative medals at the ceremony at Dartington Hall, Totnes.

They joined 30 other blood donors from across Devon. All those at the ceremony had donated on at least 100 occasions.

World renowned chef Michael Caines will be given the Freedom of the City of Exeter on Thursday (21 April) and celebrate by driving a flock of sheep through the city centre.

Caines has been recognised by Exeter City Council for his achievements in the field of cookery. Born and bred in Exeter, Caines has helped put Exeter's name on the world map as a city that supports cookery.

Temporary traffic lights will be introduced on Bridge Road in Exeter overnight on Monday and Tuesday evening next week to carry out changes to the lane closures.

From 11pm on Monday (18 April) until 5am the next morning and the same period overnight on Tuesday (19 April), traffic lights will be in place on short lengths of the road. This will allow the contractor to change the traffic management layout to a two-way traffic contraflow on the Bascule Bridge.
