Exeter Northcott Theatre announces autumn season

Exeter Northcott Theatre is delighted to announce its exciting autumn 2016 season.

This season the theatre has cut its £2 transaction booking fee. Instead, customers who want their tickets posted will be asked to pay a small charge to cover postage costs.

Cars damaged in suspected arson attacks

Police are appealing for anyone with information about a series of car fires in Exeter this morning (9 June 2016) to contact them.

Police were made aware just after 2am that two cars were on fire in Church Terrace. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service attended to extinguish the fires and no further damage was caused to other vehicles in the road.

The fire service was already dealing with another car on fire in a driveway of a property in Magdalen Road, and another car was reported on fire in Fore Street, Heavitree.

Helmores cover Coast to Coast for charity

As part of their fundraising challenge for Children’s Hospice South West, Helmores Estate Agents are organising a cycling, walking and running journey from Ilfracombe to Exmouth.

Following the Tarka Trail, roads and the Exe Estuary cycle route members of the Helmores team, supported and sponsored by local businesses and the public, will be completing the 93 mile route in relays on Tuesday the 14th June. In total they hope to cover over 350 miles between them and raise plenty of money for a worthy cause.

Coastal Recycling Community Fund donates £55k to Devon organisations

Coastal Recycling has awarded seven community grants, totalling £55,650, to organisations across Devon who aim to enhance community spaces, improve biodiversity, cultural facilities and places for outdoor recreation.

The grant funding, administered by national charity GrantScape, will support a variety of projects, including improving access at Exeter’s brain charity Headway, a brand new clubhouse facility for Bideford BMX and renewable energy heating for Topsham Community Pool.

The Samaritans charity in and around Exeter is celebrating Volunteers’ Week by saying a great big thank you to its team of lifesaving volunteers.

Every six seconds someone contacts Samaritans, and across the UK and Republic of Ireland, over 20,000 volunteers give five million hours of their time a year responding to calls, fundraising, supporting people in prisons, workplaces and schools, and running local branches like the one for Exeter, Mid and East Devon. It would cost £72m a year to operate the charity if all volunteers were paid.

An ambulance driver from Crediton has scooped a pair of VIP hospitality tickets to the Devon stage finish of the Tour of Britain 2016.

On Friday September 9 the world’s top cycling teams and riders will race from Sidmouth on the East Devon coast to the summit of Haytor on Dartmoor.

Flybe back in profit

Exeter-based Flybe this morning announced pre-tax annual profits of £2.7m.

The figure compares with a loss of £35.6m the previous year and was helped, in part, by cheaper fuel prices.

The company said there had been an 8.2% increase in passenger revenue and 5.9% increase in passenger numbers but that conditions remained "challenging".

Saad Hammad, chief executive, who is steering the company through a three year turnaround plan said: "We delivered top-line growth in a difficult revenue environment, expanding our network and carrying more passengers than last year...
