Exeter funeral home makes eggs-tra special donation

A funeral home in Exeter has helped bring Easter joy to the local community and children in need after donating 205 chocolate eggs and ‘bags of hope’.

The treats were gathered through a collection donation drive organised by the team at Co-op Funeralcare Exeter on Cowick Street, in St Thomas Shopping Centre, with some of the Easter eggs donated to children living in temporary accommodation in the city.

The Axe Vale Festival raised the standard once again for 2016.

Much loved by locals and visitors, the entertainment this year took the festival into another league with a mix of forestry skills courtesy of Adams Axmen, courage, teamwork and entertainment from the Rockwood Dogs Display team and the awe inspiring Adrenaline Tour motorcycle and quad bike stunt show which had everyone gasping as Jason Smyth repeatedly took to the air executing incredible leaps.

Swimmer dies in sea off Teignmouth

A SWIMMER has died in the sea off Teignmouth.

Devon and Cornwall Police say coastguards recovered a body shortly after 8pm yesterday (Monday).

The age and sex of the swimmer are yet to be confirmed but it is understood the deceased is a woman.

Police say the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Heart of the South West devolution partners to consider Combined Authority

Councils across Devon and Somerset have been reassured that their devolution proposals do not require an elected mayor.

At a recent summit meeting with council leaders, Local Government Secretary Greg Clark said Government would not impose an elected Mayor as part of any Heart of the South West (HotSW) Devolution Partnership deal.

New powers would instead be overseen by a Combined Authority consisting of representatives of Devon and Somerset county councils, Plymouth and Torbay councils, the 13 district councils in the two counties and Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks....

Over 240 crews to compete in Exeter Rowing regatta

Exeter Quay will once again be host to the City of Exeter Rowing Regatta on Saturday 9 July for a full day of sprint racing at the historic quayside.

Better journeys on the way for SW rail passengers

Plans to give rail passengers along the South Western network more trains, more space and faster journeys were today (4 July) announced by Rail Minister Claire Perry. The Department for Transport has published documents setting out how bidders for the new South Western franchise will be required to provide plans for:

  • At least 95 additional services on weekdays from December 2018.
  • A doubling of services along the London Waterloo to Reading and Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside routes from two to four trains an hour.

Be wary of knotweed advice, researchers warn

Gardeners turning to the internet for advice about Japanese knotweed are likely to find a wide range of sometimes contradictory and potentially misleading advice that could put them on the wrong side of the law, scientists at the University of Exeter have found.

A study by researchers at the University of Exeter’s Penryn campus which looked at knotweed guidance from a range of sources on the web found that information, even that from local government sources, varies significantly in its comprehensiveness and accuracy and could lead to further spread of the invasive plant.

Devon beaver mascot named

A competition held by the charity Devon Wildlife Trust to find a name for its beaver mascot has revealed a winner. ‘Nora’, is the name chosen for the six-foot tall mascot which is being used by the charity to promote its work for England’s only breeding population of wild beavers which live on the River Otter, East Devon.

The name, which plays on the rodents’ habit of gnawing on riverside trees and plants, was the idea of Sidmouth shop owner Karen Greenslade.

Appeal to trace missing man

A family are looking for a 47 Year old man who has gone missing.

Steve Rose from Chesterfield in Derbyshire was last seen in Exeter on 16 June 2016.

His family and friends are appealing to anyone who have seen him or may know where he is.

The public are urged to contact the police by calling 101 if they have any information.

Third economic well-being survey launched

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, today launches its third economic well-being survey.

The survey, in partnership with the Express and Echo, Radio Exe, Exeter City Council and Exeter Chamber of Commerce, will highlight the current financial and employment situation in Exeter. It will help Citizens Advice Exeter to highlight trends with policy-makers and to further tailor their advice and information resources to meet the needs of local people.
