The Devon County Show is proud to announce the launch of its first‑ever Community Growing Hub, a major new feature for 2026 designed to inspire visitors of all ages to get growing, get gardening, and get connected. The Hub will be hosted by horticulturalist and community growing advocate Kenny Raybould, who will lead a team of volunteers offering hands‑on advice, and practical support throughout the three‑day show.

Donkey Sanctuary to host bat beacon

The population of Greater Horseshoe Bats has declined by over 90% in the UK during the last century, with Devon now a stronghold for the species in the South West.

Led by Devon Wildlife Trust and supported by the National Lottery, as well as other funders, The Devon Greater Horseshoe Bat Project has chosen to partner with The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth to provide a local information hub, known as a ‘Bat Beacon’, where people can find out more about the project.

Volunteering Sparks Something Good in Exeter & Plymouth

M&S colleagues and customers across Devon have joined forces in a special volunteering initiative that has had a big impact on 24 local charities.

Nine M&S stores from Plymouth to Exeter took part in Spark Something Good, which saw more than 300 volunteers give up over 2,653 hours for free, in order to make a positive difference.

Man arrested after Post Office robbery

Police officers from Mid Devon have arrested a man after responding to reports of a robbery at Thorverton Post Office on Thursday 22 September 2016.

Police were called just after 3.50pm after a man had allegedly entered a post office on Bullen Street and threatened staff with what was thought to be a Taser.

Appeal after boy punched and threatened with knife in Exeter

Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault on a 17-year-old boy on Flower Pot Lane, Exeter.

The assault happened on Thursday 22 September 2016 between 6 and 630pm.

The male offender allegedly punched the 17-year-old victim several times and then threatened him with a knife which he was wielding at the time.

Police Constable Matt Beards said: “There were approximately 30 people present watching the altercation.

Exeter School welcomed former pupil and BBC sports commentator and broadcaster Sara Orchard to Speech Day on 22 September where she entertained all present with tales of her 13 years working on the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, the Rugby World Cup and Wimbledon.

Exeter ranked top university in South West

The University of Exeter is the top university in the southwest according to The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017.

The university, which was The Times and The Sunday Times University of the Year for 2012-13, ranks 9= in this year’s league table. The Southwest region is well represented in the wider top 20 with Bath ranking 12th in the UK and Bristol 19th.

Motorcyclist dies following collision with car

A motorcyclist has died following a serious collision in Newton Abbot on Thursdsay (22 September).

Emergency services were called to Shaldon Road at 2.10pm after the collision between a red Mercedes B180 and the black Yamaha V-Max motorcycle outside Milber Service Station.

The motorcycle rider, a 53-year-old man from Torquay, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Torbay Hospital. He died from his injuries in the early hours of today [23 September].

Formal identification has not been carried although his next of kin have been informed.
