Salvaging important historical remains from Exeter's Royal Clarence Hotel

Exeter City Council is doing everything it can to salvage as much as possible from the original structure of the fire-damaged Royal Clarence Hotel.

The City Council said yesterday (Friday 4 November) that it was working closely with the hotel’s owners, Andrew Brownsword Hotels, Historic England and other partners to salvage and record any particularly significant fabric and items from the wreckage.

Following last weekend’s fire, the site has now been handed back to the owners, Andrew Brownsword Hotels. The main priority is to make the site safe.

Waste service consultation begins

Devon County Council (DCC) is inviting residents to have their say on proposed changes to its waste management service.

The changes at Devon’s Household Waste Recycling Centres include length restrictions on vehicles using the sites, charging for the disposal of all plastic construction and demolition DIY waste and an amendment to the list of non-acceptable wastes.

Changes are also proposed to ensure that the amount DCC pays community groups to compost waste is comparable with the authority’s own composting costs.

Police warning after attempted sexual assault in Exeter

Police are advising the public to be vigilant after an attempt was made to sexually assault a woman.

Police are currently investigating an attempted sexual assault in Exeter that happened on Thursday (3 November) between 1.40pm and 2pm.

A woman was approached by two unknown men, both dressed in black with black gloves, who then attempted to sexually assault her in the lane, which runs between Bathern Road and Cumberland Drive adjacent to the A3015 (Rydon Lane) in Exeter. The woman managed to fight them off to which the men ran off.

It has been confirmed this afternoon that the 2016 Exeter Christmas Market will go ahead. Included in this year’s event will be a special chalet for the use of independent traders in the cathedral area who have been closed since the fire took place.

The Market starts on Saturday 19 November and runs until Sunday 18 December.

Chloe Ring, aged eight from Exeter, has been nominated for a ‘Young Person of the Year’ award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the deafblind community by national disability charity, Sense. Chloe, who has dual sensory loss, was born profoundly deaf and severely sight impaired. At 14 months old, Chloe underwent a successful cochlear implant surgery which helped her gain her hearing. Since making the brave step to surgery, Chloe has flourished and now attends her local mainstream school, St Leonard’s Primary School in Exeter, where she is becoming a proficient braillist and...
