Exeter Racecourse launches Community Raceday and calls for Devon’s community heroes

Exeter Racecourse has launched a brand-new Community Raceday and is inviting people across Devon to nominate a community hero who deserves recognition.

Community Raceday takes place on Friday, February 20, during half term, and coincides with Devon Day at the racecourse. The initiative celebrates the people who make a real difference in their communities – from volunteers and carers to sports coaches, fundraisers and quiet grafters who go above and beyond.

Every nominee will receive a free ticket to Exeter Racecourse, and one overall winner will be treated to a Family...

Devon writer Joma West, 30, was announced as the winner of this year’s Novella Award at a ceremony at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Axis Arts Centre last night.

Joma’s novella Wild was described by judge author, Lucy English, as “an extraordinary piece of writing, full of surprises both in terms of subject matter and technique.”

Launched in 2014, The Novella Award aims to find the best up-and-coming writer of a short novel and is awarded to a previously unpublished work of fiction, between 20,000-40,000 words in length.

Exeter College has been placed in the top spot in a league table of colleges published by FE Week, an industry leading publication focused on delivering the latest further education and skills news.

The table was compiled using a points based system, with points awarded against a number of key criteria published by the Department of Education. Each college was scored out of a possible 16. A process that saw Exeter College score a perfect 16, something no other college was able to achieve.

Second man charged with murder following Exeter death

A second man has been charged in connection to the death of 30-year-old James Woodhouse, whose body was discovered in a property in Okehampton Road, Exeter, on Monday 21 November.

Thomas Killen, aged 32 from North Lawn Court, Exeter, has been charged with murder and is due to appear at Exeter Magistrates court today.

As previously confirmed, Brett Williams Edwards, 37, from Okehampton Road, Exeter, was charged for the murder of James Woodhouse and is remanded in custody to appear before Exeter Crown Court on Thursday 22 December 2016.

The knife amnesty held last week (15-21) by Devon and Cornwall Police saw over 200 knives of varying types being handed in at police stations across the force area.

These knives are no longer at risk of falling into the wrong hands, nor will they be responsible for causing harm. They will be destroyed in the next few weeks.

The variety of knives is staggering – from small pocket knives and illegal lock knives to commando and Nepalese kukri-type knives, along with a random assortment of knives found in a typical kitchen.
