Exeter ranked move-friendly city

Exeter has been named one of the UK’s least stressful cities to move to, thanks to strong infrastructure, good housing availability, and ease of access to short-term services.

In a new national study released by Pay Less for Storage, Exeter scored 74 out of 100 in the “move-friendliness” index, ranking joint 10th alongside Inverness, Lancaster and Ripon. The research measured practical relocation challenges like van hire access, local self-storage options, chain-free housing stock, and the availability of short-term rentals.

City council takes action on St Thomas arches

At the Exeter City Council meeting held on 18 October, Councillors formally approved the £50,000 budget to install fencing the length of the arches. This follows repeated complaints from residents about anti-social behaviour in the area.

Councillor Hannah Packham said “It has been a really difficult and distressing period for residents, with totally unacceptable behaviour taking place directly next to, and occasionally on, their properties. Dartmoor’s stunning landscape, ever changing weather and fascinating folklore is an inspiration for many film makers and this year it has again worked its magic on 13 young people aged between 8 and 16 from the Buckfastleigh area.

Devon Wildlife Trust calls for votes to bag a share of £12.5m fund

Devon Wildlife Trust is bidding to bag a cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative to help improve a popular East Devon nature reserve. Devon’s JSA claimants lowest on record for sixth month in a row

Devon’s Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) fell by 101 claimants between August and September 2016 - the total claimant count now standing at 2,848 – a new historic low.

Seven of Devon’s eight districts either experienced falls in JSA or remained unchanged over the period. Teignbridge rose by five claimants, with Exeter experiencing the greatest fall of 37 claimants.

The claimant rate - the proportion of the county’s working age population claiming JSA - fell by 0.1 per cent in Exeter, South Hams and Torridge, while the remaining districts experienced no change.

Exeter’s Queen St. Dining will introduce a taste of Scandinavia to the region when KuPP opens its doors on 29th October.

Inspired by cuisine from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, KuPP is the seventh restaurant to launch in the city’s new £12m dining destination. It will join Turtle Bay, Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK), The Stable, Absurd Bird, The Terrace and Comptoir Libanais.

Heritage project brings former City players together

A special gathering of former Exeter City players will take place at the home match with Cambridge United this Saturday (22 October).

The event is being held thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund backed project on the history of St James Park. The project is being led by the University of Exeter in partnership with the Exeter City History Group set up by the Supporters Trust.

Second chance to see iconic Shrouds of the Somme

THE iconic installation commemorating soldiers who fell on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, which captivated millions when it was displayed in Exeter, is to be shown again.

Chilcotts Auctioneers summer show competition winner has been announced.

The competition asked visitors to the Chilcotts show stand at the Honiton and North Devon Shows to take a guess at the price an auction lot would achieve at auction.

The lot, an early twentieth century miniature chest on stand, was a tricky one to estimate. However, Paul Benson from Taunton got very close with a guess of £225. The chest was sold at auction in the September sale for £220.
