Zeal Hotels has achieved the BREEAM Outstanding rating at the design stage for its voco Zeal Hotel, located at Exeter Science Park.

The 142-bedroom hotel is currently on schedule in week 26 of a 75-week construction programme.

Record £6.4 million awarded for further year of skills training in Devon

A successful skills training programme led by Devon County Council has received its largest funding award from the Department for Education to further boost employment opportunities across the county.

Train4Tomorrow is being delivered in partnership with Cornwall Council and is receiving £6.4million in 2024/2025, a significant increase on previous years which will enable more than 2,000 adults in Devon and Cornwall to access Skills Bootcamps in a variety of dynamic sectors.

It’s been named a “ powerhouse” food because of its nutritional value, and now watercress is the key ingredient in a range of soothing skin care products, which launched this month.

Cranbrook Education Campus , part of the Ted Wragg Trust family, welcomed local artist Brenda Thomas into the school this month, marking the first artistic contribution to the school's gallery initiative in 2024. The initiative, started in February 2023, aims to bring the world of art closer to the Cranbrook community.

Brenda Thomas works largely with recycled fabrics and her work is inspired by coastal walks with her dog. Her work has been exhibited around the country and several pieces have won national awards.

Resurfacing planned at Exminster

Resurfacing will be carried out next month on the A379 through Exminster.

The four-week scheme is planned to be undertaken in two phases.

Work between the A379 Sannerville Way junction and Reddaway Drive by Exminster Garage will start on Monday 5 February and will continue until Friday 16 February. Access from the Swan’s Nest roundabout into Exminster from the South will be maintained during this phase, and the road will be fully open over the weekend of Saturday 10 February and Sunday 11 February.

An inspiring line up of authors will be heading to the East Devon coast this March for Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival’s Spring Weekend.

Famous names heading to the seaside town this March include BBC newsreader and journalist Clive Myrie, Poet Laureate Simon Armitage and mathematician Marcus du Sautoy. Two dementia researchers are hosting Culture Box Live this month, an exhibition which aims to stimulate public interest in dementia.

Dr Chloe Asker, a Research Fellow in the School of Psychology, and Professor Victoria Tischler, Professor of Behavioural Science in the same School, will be presenting research findings and artist commissions from the Culture Box project, which supported people with dementia and their carers during the pandemic by providing creative and arts-based activities. Creative training for care staff and artists will also be available.

New mural uncovered promoting acts of kindness in central Exeter

The ‘Exeter Kindness Mural’ is now complete, inspiring passers-by to be kind to others. Painted by local artist, Paul Colsell, it is a reproduction of a famous Charley Mackesy illustration from his best-selling book and Oscar-winning film. The Exeter Daily previously covered news of the project getting the go ahead last July. The Crossline Building in Heavitree Road has been scaffolded for several months while the gable wall was renovated and painted.
