Pupils from Westcountry schools used genetic processes commonly seen in TV crime dramas to help solve the mystery of who is sabotaging Devon’s very own Bake Off.

Year 9s from Devon, Dorset and Somerset got hands-on with scientists in University of Exeter Medical School laboratories in British Science Week, when they used state-of-the-art microbiology and DNA analysis techniques to unravel a scandal which had erupted in the “Great Bideford Bake Off”.

National Grid has started work on a £50 million refurbishment of pylons in Devon and part of Cornwall to keep power flowing in the South West and beyond for decades to come.

The line of pylons, running between substations in Exeter and Landulph, was built in the 1960s. The wires carrying electricity that hang between them, along with other equipment, are approaching the end of their working life and need replacing.

Great news! Lots of Lego has just arrived at The Beacon Community Centre in Beacon Heath.

Richard Cummings, the centre manager, saw a Lego charity offer and applied a few weeks ago. Yesterday, on Rich’s birthday, he received a large box, which must be worth hundreds of pounds of Lego.

Rich said: “It’s brilliant! What a fabulous birthday present. We’re really looking forward to sharing this amazing gift with lots of local children and adults who come along to the many activities we regularly hold here. Thank you Lego.”

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, is celebrating being awarded £25,000 through the Martin Lewis Fund that will help make a real difference to local people’s lives.
