Work starts on Ashburton Skate Park
Work has started on an exciting new project in Ashburton. A new concrete skate park for young and old is being built at the Recreation Ground at Prigg Meadow thanks, in large part, to the tireless efforts of the Ashburton Rollers. The Rollers have campaigned for over three years, working hard to obtain the necessary funds for this much wanted community initiative costing £100,000 overall, that will serve the people of Ashburton and surrounding areas for many years to come.
Preparatory work started two weeks ago and the builders, Maverick Industries, who also designed the park, are now creating the basic form of the park, which will be built with steel and concrete.
This partnership project is being built on land owned and maintained by Teignbridge District Council. The Ashburton Rollers secured £50,000 from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund for the build and other monies have come from: Dartmoor National Park’s Sustainable Development Fund, Glendinning, Ashburton’s Town Lottery Fund and the Co-op Community Fund amongst other local contributors and local fundraising efforts.
Rollers Chair, Deborah Sterling, said:
“It’s great that work has finally started after all our planning and fundraising. We’re really looking forward to seeing the completed skate park and the first skaters making use of the new facility before the summer holidays. Anyone can follow our progress and find out about future events on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ashburtonrollers.”
Nikki Taylor, Sports Development Officer at Teignbridge District Council, said:
“I am delighted that the many years of hard work, meetings and campaigning by the Ashburton Rollers, has finally come to fruition. I cannot congratulate them enough on their hard work and dedication. I am really looking forward to attending the official opening of the skate park later this summer.”
The skate park is expected to be completed by the summer holidays so gets your skates ready! Roll on summer!
