28 July 2025 – Bodmin, South West England:
Devon & Cornwall Police joined forces with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) in a one-day operation targeting uninsured drivers, coinciding with one of the busiest travel days of the year due to the school holiday rush.

The operation resulted in four vehicles being seized for no or inadequate insurance, and seven fixed penalty noticesissued. Officers also tackled a range of additional offences, including drug driving, no MOT, driving while disqualified, defective tyres, unrestrained children, insecure loads, and one recall to prison.

Uninsured driving remains a widespread issue in the UK. Every 20 minutes, someone is injured by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver—many sustaining life-changing injuries. Uninsured drivers are also frequently linked to wider criminal activity, such as drug offences, excessive speeding, and organised crime.

Sgt James Gallienne of Devon & Cornwall Police said:
"At least one person every day suffers serious injury from an uninsured or hit-and-run driver. Operations like this help educate and enforce the law to keep our roads safe."

Martin Saunders, Head of Uninsured Driving Prevention at MIB, encouraged drivers to double-check their insurance status:
"Many people drive uninsured without realising it. It’s vital to check your policy, especially during busy travel periods."

Driving uninsured can lead to serious consequences, including:

  • £300 fine and six licence points

  • Vehicle seizure and possible crushing

  • Unlimited fines or bans via court

  • Higher future insurance costs and impact on employment

In 2024, police seized over 138,000 uninsured vehicles, with one in three being crushed.

Motorists are urged to verify their cover, including class-of-use, policy status, and renewal details.
