Exeter is one of the best cities to visit in the South West. Its distinct charm draws people from across the country every year, and it has a mix of heritage sites, fun attractions and shopping opportunities to enjoy. It’s not the biggest city in the UK in comparison to other popular locations of Bristol and Plymouth. However, it’s packed with things to do and sights to see for people of all ages.

Spring is the perfect time to visit the city, and as the Easter break is also coming up, you’ll find a host of events waiting to be explored.

If you’re visiting the region for a weekend break or more extended adventure, why not check out some of these fantastic events and attractions during your getaway.

Exeter Cathedral

A visit to Exeter wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the city’s cathedral. This incredible medieval site is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in the UK and has numerous carvings that date back hundreds of years. It’s a fantastic place to visit all times of the year and has an affordable entrance fee which helps with the upkeep of this majestic building.

Its setting on the green, in the heart of the city centre, is also a fabulous place to admire the neighbouring buildings and shops. You can also grab a coffee and cake overlooking the picturesque location.

The cathedral also hosts a range of events in spring including:

  • Space: Light and Sound Show – 5th – 7th March

The nightlife in this spot is also fun and vibrant, and it’s the perfect place to get a bite to eat or even watch the grand national runners and riders and other sports in a relaxed atmosphere.

If you’re looking to learn a little more about the area, a visit to the Custom House Visitor Centre is a must. You won’t be short of things to do here, and the quay hosts a number of events throughout the year including live music and community festivals.

A spot of retail therapy

The city is a haven of shops, including boutiques and main retailers. There are lots of traffic-free spaces so you can wander freely, plus the high street has lots of little streets just off the main area to discover independent stores and foodie spots. Princesshay is one of Exeter’s main shopping spots and is packed full of trendy retailers and restaurants. This location also plays host to events throughout the year, and individual shops have activities and competitions too.
