Teignbridge Council is offering residents the chance to recycle their real Christmas trees for free.

People can take advantage of the many ‘free tree’ recycling collection points on offer across the district. In Teignbridge last year, over 4,000 real Christmas trees were recycled and turned into compost.

Anybody wishing to dispose of their tree can go to any of the sites below on the dates and times listed.

Real trees can also be taken to Newton Abbot recycling centre, Brunel Road, at any time with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day, when it will be closed.

It’s normally open Mon-Fri from 9am to 4.30pm, Sat-Sun from 10am to 4.30pm.

With the season of goodwill in full swing, there’s bound to be some waste come the new year, especially with wrapping, cardboard and Christmas cards.

If Christmas cards are made from thin plain card they can be recycled from home in the black recycling box. As in previous years we are unable to accept any Christmas cards that contain foil, glitter or metal, or any type of wrapping paper in the recycling boxes or green bin. This is because they are not suitable for recycling at the paper mill where paper is reprocessed, or for composting.

Residents are encouraged to take surplus wrapping paper and Christmas cards to one of our 12 cardboard recycling banks located across the district. Alternatively, many supermarkets and shops offer recycling points for cards.

Find your nearest cardboard bank by visiting www.teignbridge.gov.uk/recyclingbanks

Cllr Kevin Lake, Teignbridge District Council’s executive spokesman for environmental services said: “We’re really pleased to be able to offer people the opportunity to dispose of their trees in a quick, convenient and environmentally-friendly way. We’ve run this offer for many years and it’s proved popular as was demonstrated by the huge number we received last year.

“People across Teignbridge must be thanked for their recycling efforts in 2014. Residents and businesses have done a fantastic job. To get 2015 off to a good start, I’d encourage everybody to recycle as much of their Christmas waste as they can!”
