Hospiscare is starting 2019 with a new leader at the helm. Peter Brennan has taken on the role of Chief Executive Officer for the local charity after former CEO Glynis Atherton retired at the end of last year. The charity which provides end of life care for patients and their families in Exeter, Mid and East Devon needs to raise an annual sum of £7 million to care for the growing local population.

Originally from Leicester, Peter’s career brought him to Devon in 2002, working as Group Managing Director of the Vapormatic business in Exeter, a subsidiary of Deere & Company Inc. (John Deere).  It was during this time that Peter first became involved with Hospiscare, initially as a corporate supporter then individually joining in fundraising challenges like the Sahara and Icelandic Treks. Peter went on to build a strong personal connection with the charity volunteering as a Hospiscare Trustee for three years prior to becoming CEO this January.

An enthusiastic endurance walker, squash player and supporter of both Leicester Tigers and Exeter Chiefs, Peter and his wife Jane live in Mid Devon and have two grown up children, Tom and Ciaran.

Peter commented: “I am genuinely excited to get started in this role and to follow through with the intentions of the charity, which are;

“We want everyone approaching the end of their lives to receive the best possible care and to die well in their preferred place of care.

“In response to what patients and families have told us, the vision for the next few years is to continue delivering outstanding care for patients with any type of terminal illness and provide support for their families. We will also expand our Hospiscare@Home service, an extension of the Clinical Nurse Specialist provision, into more areas across our patch. This is aimed at patients with a life limiting illness who want to stay at home at the end of their lives, offering hands-on nursing care at home when required, any time of day or night.

“Of course, none of this would be possible without the generosity of the local communities we serve. We are really grateful to local people who volunteer, support and donate to Hospiscare in so many different ways.

“I feel very fortunate to have joined an organisation with such a highly skilled and dedicated team of staff, volunteers, trustees and partners and feel privileged to be leading such a vital service for the people of Exeter, Mid and East Devon.”

Hospiscare is a local adult hospice charity, providing high quality care and support to people with any type of terminal illness, and those close to them, in Exeter, Mid and East Devon.  A gift to Hospiscare in your Will helps ensure the future of the charity in Devon for generations to come.
