More Tea, Topsham?

Topsham has turned on the (socially-distanced) style with its first Big Afternoon Tea.

This was a town-wide celebration of a Devon summer with classic sandwiches, cakes and cuppas taken in streets, gardens and parks throughout the town.

The idea emerged from Topsham resident, Hilary Bush. Hilary’s farming background along with the fun her street had on locked down VE Day, meant she could see this as a great idea to support food businesses whilst boosting spirits in town.

With the help of Love Topsham - a not-for-profit community group set up to promote the town and its businesses - this turned into a major event with literally hundreds of people taking advantage of special Big Afternoon Tea offers put forward by the local cafes and restaurants.

The big day, Saturday June 27, was marked by local folk singer Sadie Horler busking in town to serenade shoppers queuing for their offers, Alistair Cope and friends with a spectacular Pennyfarthing led bike ride in period costume around the town, appearances by the town crier, and then culminated in the 3pm feast.

The town rose to the occasion while sticking by social distancing guidelines.

Some neighbours celebrated with tea in front gardens and along their streets, more private events were held in back gardens and living rooms, and yet others enjoyed tea and cakes near the town’s famous Goat Walk.

Ginny, a local resident said “We really enjoyed our community get-together at Pound Lane Green. Homemade scones, Topsham Market Strawberry Jam, Arthurs Clotted Cream and Richard’s delicious strawberries.”

Throughout the week leading to the event many of Topsham’s independent retailers had special food and drink offers for holders of the Love Topsham card, a way in which supporters of the town - those living locally and the many regular visitors - can contribute towards its recovery from the impact of Coronavirus on the community and shops.

“The event was a definite success! A boost for the local economy and residents’ spirits! We may well repeat it in the future.” explains Lily Neal of the Love Topsham group.

“The town is now open again with almost all our businesses adapting to the new circumstances, operating safely for visitors and residents alike. It’s a testimony to the flexibility, enthusiasm and determination of all our 50-plus independent retailers” she adds.
