A trio of Teignbridge parks have received the prestigious Green Flag award yet again for their high standard of quality and cleanliness.

Decoy Country Park and Courtenay Park, Newton Abbot, and The Den, Teignmouth, are confirmed as among the best parks and open spaces in Britain.

Decoy Country Park has won the award for 12 years, The Den 10 years and Courtenay Park eight years.
A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space is of the highest quality standard.

All three Teignbridge sites boast open grassed areas with beautiful walks, as well as different and unique play facilities including a BMX race track and dirt jumps, a sensory garden, a concrete bowl skate park and a wet play area.

The Green Flag scheme is the national benchmark for quality parks, and is run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. Each park or open space is judged against set criteria and they need to show improvement every year to be awarded the coveted status.

Cllr Philip Bullivant, Teignbridge District Council’s Executive member for Recreation and Leisure said: “The open spaces in our towns are very important to our residents who enjoy them every day. We are proud that our efforts to provide the highest standards have again been recognised through the award of green flags for three of our largest open spaces.

“Without the commitment of our staff and the support shown by residents we would not be able to deliver the high standards that the Green Flags represent. I would like to thank all residents for their ongoing support and help in keeping Teignbridge a great place to live and work.”

Chrissie Drew, Teignbridge District Council’s Green Spaces Project Officer said: “We’re delighted to have achieved this award again and would like to thank Teignbridge staff, Countryside Rangers and grounds maintenance staff from Idverde for their continued hard work. Not forgetting of course all the families and friends that visit the wonderful parks in Teignbridge.”

Cllr Jackie Hook, ward member for Newton Abbot Bushell said: “It is great news that we can continue to proudly fly the Green Flag awards for our beautiful parks and open spaces. Thank you to everyone in Teignbridge and all the staff involved with making these areas look so wonderful to attract locals and visitors all year round.”

Cllr Mike Pilkington, ward member for Newton Abbot College said: “Yet again Decoy Country Park has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag for a public open space maintained to the highest standards. This is fantastic news and a real accolade for the team of Teignbridge staff and volunteers that work so hard to make sure that the Park is such a wonderful place to spend time with family or just walk and relax.

“May I also take this opportunity to say a big thank you to the many people who visit Decoy Country Park and help keep the space shipshape in their own way. Your contribution to achieving this award is appreciated and does not go unnoticed.”

Cllr Ann Jones, ward member for Newton Abbot College said:

“I think it is wonderful that once again we have been awarded the Green Flag award for our beautiful parks. This award together with the awards for our beaches makes us, in my opinion, the ‘best in the west’ for visitors.”

Cllr Sylvia Russell, ward member for Teignmouth East and Executive Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing said:

“Again this is another positive story about Teignmouth and many congratulations and thanks to our sea front staff and gardeners who ensure that our green spaces are appreciated by everyone. It is a delight to see groups of people just relaxing on the Den in this glorious weather.”

Paul Todd, International Green Flag Award scheme manager said:

“We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, with more Green Flags awarded this year than last year. Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.

"We are proud to have so many wonderful green spaces in the UK for people to enjoy, and hope that next year, we award even more flags.”
