The last Antiques and Decorative sale of the year for Sidmouth based auctioneers Potburys ended on a high with a five figure sale price and record buyer interest.

Over 500 lots were offered to bidders in a busy auction room and online via thesaleroom.com. A number of stand out items attracted widespread interest and strong bidding. Lots ranged from traditional antiques and collectibles through to jewellery, ceramics and even motorbikes.

A record number of bidders registered to bid online and extra staff were drafted in to handle the number of telephone bidders.

The star lot was a three-carat solitaire diamond ring, which was highly coveted.   With fierce bidding in the room and seven telephone bidders the ring eventually sold to a telephone bidder for £20,000.

Other notable and interesting lots sold on the day included:

  • A Norton SS motorbike with the distinctive registration number BOO 37. This 650cc motorbike, first registered in 1961, sold to a delighted buyer for £6,200.
  • A second motorbike, a restoration project Norton SS (part converted to a cafe racer) sold for £3,600.
  • A pair of early Victorian silver wine coasters fetched £2,000.
  • A three-quarter size snooker table, sold for £850.
  • A collection of stamps and covers relating to Epsom's Pirate Postal Service, which operated during the 1971 National postal strike, sold to an online bidder for £700.

Brinley Roberts, Auction Manager, comments: “It was a great finish to the year with brilliant results across a wide range of lots and some exciting moments in the auction room.”

“We’re delighted that our Antiques and Decorative sales continue to go from strength to strength. Each sale we hold seems to attract more interesting lots and buyer demand.”

The 2016 auction sale year isn’t quite over for Potburys yet. The last auction of the year will be a General and Collectable sale on 20 December. The first auction of the New Year will be the General and Collectable Sale on 10 January.
