LED Leisure Management is delighted to be opening the doors to all the new facilities at Exmouth Leisure Centre this half-term.

Monday 26th October marks the end to an extensive year-long refurbishment programme. During this time the centre has remained open while the building work has steadily progressed and LED would like to thank their customers and members for their patience and understanding.

The £2m redevelopment was the result of increasing demand for health, fitness and leisure facilities in the area.  A public consultation highlighted the need for a greater variety of activities for children, families, seniors and the less able.

The £1.8m investment by LED has been facilitated by East Devon District Council and also includes National Lottery funding of £200,000 for the 11 exciting climbing walls – a ‘clip and climb’ style area which is eagerly anticipated in the local community.

Earlier this year, LED ran a design competition, inviting children from local schools to design one of the walls.  The winner of the ‘Sandcastle’ designed wall - Jess from Marpool Primary School - will be the first to climb it, on Monday 26th October.

Climbing parties will be available for up to 12 people at a time from November and bookings are already being taken by the team.

LED CEO Peter Gilpin said “This is the culmination of four years of planning and consultation to ensure that Exmouth residents and visitors alike can benefit from a state-of-the-art leisure centre.  In these days of public sector cut-backs and ‘austerity’, it is great to be bucking the trend.

LED will have invested over £2.5m in local leisure facilities in 2015, although more is planned in the future.  Later phases of the leisure centre redevelopment will see the pool changing facilities refurbished and, eventually, an estuary-side café.

I am very grateful to East Devon District Council, who have facilitated and supported this redevelopment, which I am confident will be very well received by our customers. ”

East Devon District Council Chief Executive Mark Williams said: ”We are delighted to be able to support the redevelopment of Exmouth Leisure Centre with the loan of £1.8 million to LED which shows this Council’s commitment to improving and upgrading the leisure facilities in Exmouth.  The newly redeveloped leisure centre will be a fantastic place for all our residents to enjoy with lots of new experiences that is part of our wider commitment to the regeneration of the town and its seafront. ”

As well as the Climbing area, there are 6 brand new Studios, one of which will be a dedicated Toning studio.  It will house 12 toning tables, which provide a power-assisted workout, an alternative to a traditional gym or exercise class, often popular with social groups and friends, or people with restricted movement or injuries.
The others will house Studio Cycling, Yoga, Pilates, Kettlercise, Pump and a huge range of other classes.

The fantastic new Gym, with the latest equipment, opened in May and customer feedback has been extremely positive.

Alongside all the building work, the team at Exmouth Leisure Centre has been working hard to create an interesting and varied programme of activities for every age and ability.  They will be also launching their new class programme during half-term.
