Exeter Science Centre – the small charity with big ambitions – is back at Maketank from September 6-10th with this year’s interactive exhibition! It’s the longest-running event during this year’s British Science Festival, and the charity is one of the Festival Partners this year, supporting the Festival’s Community Grants.

The Climate Exhibition 2023 has been significantly revamped from last year’s exhibition, with input from communities in the city and region to offer an even more engaging and accessible experience that’s brimming with new content and research.

The exhibition is centred around climate modelling – which not only helps scientists to understand our own climate and how it is changing, but also the climates on other planets. The whole experience is based on local research, and Exeter is a world-leader in this area; the city is home to the largest number of meteorologists and climate change specialists in the UK, along with a leading Astrophysics research group with expertise in exoplanet climates.

Visitors to the exhibition can expect a varied programme of activities each day. This includes youth takeover evenings (Wednesday and Thursday evening), adults-only lates sessions (Friday and Saturday evening) and lunchtime talks and creative sessions throughout the week. It’s completely free to attend, and visitors will get to engage with hands-on exhibits, two out-of-this-world virtual reality experiences, and chats with exhibition mediators – many of whom are local scientists.

This is a tiny taste of the multi-million pound, new kind of science discovery centre they are planning to create in Exeter. They intend it to be ‘the coolest place to visit’ in the region, as well as a cultural and community hub. With green walls, rooftop gardens, and experiences for all ages – from dedicated toddler takeovers to adults-only in-the-dark dining experiences – they want to create an incredible space for everybody to encounter the many aspects of science in ways that are relevant to them, whatever their interests.

Exeter Science Centre recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Exeter to highlight their intention to work together on their common goals, including partnering in the establishment of the science centre in the city. In parallel to fundraising and planning for the physical building, they are working on projects focused around global issues, to connect people with the inspiring local work in this area and empowering them to play a part in tackling the world’s most pressing problems.
