Exeter High Street to undergo essential paving improvements next month

Essential improvement work is to be carried out on pavements in Exeter High Street next month.

The 11 week scheme, which will improve the surface of the footway on the majority of High Street, will start from the upper end, near Boots, on Monday 9 September.

No major excavation work will be carried out, but granite paving slabs which are cracked, loose or rocking will be replaced in order to prevent them becoming a safety issue.

The opportunity will also be taken to carry out some surface drainage work improvements.

Repairs are necessary on both sides of the High Street but locations will be staggered in order to minimise disruption.

The highway will not be closed and pedestrian access to city centre shops will be maintained at all times.

Work will not be carried out on the High Street when The Tour of Britain races through the city centre on Friday 20 September.

John Harvey, Exeter City Centre Manager, said:

“I’m delighted with the paving improvement works planned, and pleased that they’re part of a scheme to get our pavements right across the whole of the City Centre.

“Our recent track record of delivering city centre street and utility works without disruption for city centre businesses and our shoppers and visitors is good and I’ll be looking for more of the same.”

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highway Maintenance, said:

“This scheme will ensure the High Street is in tip-top condition.

“These repairs need to be carried out now to ensure any uneven or broken slabs are replaced before they become a safety issue, and every effort is being made to minimise disruption to shoppers and traders.

“The drainage and subsidence problems at the lower end of High Street were dealt with in good time earlier in the year and we’ll be aiming for more of the same so the High Street is at its best ahead of the all important run-up to Christmas.”

Work will be carried out by SWH on behalf of Devon County Council.
