Exeter Heritage Open Days

Some of Exeter's most fascinating buildings are set to open their doors to the public free of charge for Heritage Open Days.

Starting on Friday (13 September), Heritage Open Days runs until Sunday 22 September, showcasing many venues that are not usually open to the public or otherwise charge an entry fee. 

Now in its 25th year, Heritage Open Days offers up a unique opportunity to explore these sometimes hidden, often curious, and always interesting places.  This year, 49 properties or events will be taking place throughout the city, with 100 separate openings.

Some of the highlights this year include a rare opportunity to see behind the scenes of Bowhill House, and a tour of Exeter's Energy from Waste Facility.

To mark the 25th Anniversary, there will be a chance to get creative with a Heritage Haiku. In certain venues, visitors will be asked to use their impressions if the history to create a short poem.  A Haiku poet will be in residence at a number of the locations.

Cllr Rachel Sutton, Lead Councillor for Climate and Culture, said:  "Heritage Open Days is a brilliant way to get behind the scenes and see Exeter's rich history close up.  This year's programme has something for everyone and I would urge visitors and residents to get involved."

Additional Highlights this year include:

- A guided tour of the  Veitch Lampost Trail in St David's

- A behind the scenes guided tour of  Exeter City Football Club, including the new stagecoach stand .

- A guided tour of Exeter Livestock Centre during an actual market and auction

- Various tours of the Cathedral including an opportunity to see the Grandisson Chapel
